Mohammed Shami has chosen the cricket field as his answer to those questioning his fitness, and his latest performance for Bengal offered a timely reminder
of his bowling ability. The experienced pacer produced an impressive spell against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season opener, while making it clear that outside opinions would not dictate his approach to the game.
Shami returned figures of 4/30 in 17.3 overs, including nine maidens, as Bengal dismissed Delhi for 240 on the opening day of their Group C encounter at the Bengal Cricket Academy ground in Kalyani on Sunday.
Mohammed Shami Responds To Questions Over Fitness
Shami's fitness has remained a talking point amid uncertainty surrounding his return to international cricket. However, the veteran pacer appeared unfazed by the scrutiny, insisting that his performances should speak for themselves.
"You can see my fitness. Write it," Shami said, delivering a pointed response to those questioning his physical condition.
The fast bowler also expressed frustration with the constant assessment of his rhythm and appearance, arguing that people outside the game often focus more on criticism than on what happens on the field.
"People perhaps enjoy looking and passing comments more. They say the rhythm isn't there, that he doesn't look fit, or whatever else. It doesn't bother me. I'm on the ground, I'm playing, and I'm playing wherever I'm given a chance. The rest is your job," he said.
His latest performance strengthened his case for remaining in contention, although a domestic showing alone does not guarantee an international recall.
Shami Welcomes Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Comeback
The Bengal pacer's comments also came amid discussions surrounding Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to India's T20I setup for the upcoming series against New Zealand. Bhuvneshwar's recall after a four-year absence has renewed the debate over how experienced players can work their way back into the national team.
Shami backed the idea of giving deserving cricketers another opportunity, emphasising the importance of persistence.
"A person should keep going on hope alone," Shami said.
The pacer has continued to feature in domestic cricket after his last appearance for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. He also claimed 37 wickets in the previous Ranji Trophy season and represented East Zone in the Duleep Trophy.
With another productive outing behind him, Shami will hope to keep delivering consistent performances and strengthen his prospects of returning to the Indian team.
