England batter Harry Brook has issued a public apology after being fined by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for his involvement in an off-field
incident during last year's tour of New Zealand. The episode took place in Wellington, just hours before Brook was due to lead England in the third ODI of the series.
According to reports, the 26-year-old was denied entry into a nightclub over concerns that he appeared too intoxicated. An argument broke out between Brook and a bouncer, during which he was allegedly struck. Brook immediately informed England's security team, and although shaken, he did not sustain any injuries.
The ECB conducted an internal investigation into the matter, ultimately imposing a £30,000 (approximately INR 36.29 lakh) fine on the England white-ball captain. The governing body confirmed that the disciplinary process was carried out formally and confidentially.
In a statement released through the ECB, Brook expressed regret for his behaviour and accepted full responsibility. "I want to apologise for my actions," he said. "I fully accept that my behaviour was wrong and brought embarrassment to both myself and the England team. "
He further acknowledged the privilege of representing the national side, adding: "Representing England is the greatest honour of all, which I take seriously and I am deeply sorry for letting down my teammates, coaches and supporters. I have reflected on the lessons it has taught me about responsibility, professionalism and the standards expected of those representing your country. I am determined to learn from this mistake and to rebuild trust through my future actions, both on and off the field. I apologise unreservedly and will work hard to ensure this does not happen again. "
An ECB spokesperson said the matter had been addressed internally: "We are aware of this incident and it has been dealt with through a formal and confidential ECB disciplinary process. The player involved has apologised and acknowledged their conduct fell below expectations on this occasion. "
Brook is set to fly home after England's 1-4 Ashes defeat in Australia. He will then depart for Sri Lanka on January 19 for a six-match white-ball series featuring three ODIs and three T20Is.
