Stadium, Mumbai Indians chased down a formidable target of 221 to defeat the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 6 wickets.
Led by a vintage masterclass from Rohit Sharma and a breakthrough performance from Ryan Rickelton, the home side secured their first opening-match victory in the IPL since 2012.
After being put in to bat by MI skipper Hardik Pandya, the Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a flyer. Captain Ajinkya Rahane rolled back the years with a sublime 67 off 40 balls, punishing the MI pace attack with elegant drives and five massive sixes. He was supported by the young sensation Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who smashed a blistering 51 off 29 deliveries to keep the momentum high.
Despite the onslaught, MI's debutant Shardul Thakur proved to be the differentiator in the middle overs. Thakur's triple strike removing Finn Allen (37), Cameron Green (18), and Rahane stalled KKR's progress just as they looked poised to cross 240. Kolkata eventually finished with 220/4, a total that many felt was above par for the Wankhede surface.
Mumbai's response was nothing short of clinical. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton dismantled the KKR bowling attack from the first over, putting on a 119-run opening stand-the highest ever for MI at this venue.
Rohit was in spectacular form, entertaining the crowd with a 78 off 38 balls that included six towering maximums. At the other end, Ryan Rickelton proved why he is one of the most feared T20 prospects, bludgeoning 81 off 43 balls. By the time both openers departed, the required rate had been brought down to a manageable level. Despite a brief middle-order stutter, Hardik Pandya (18*) and Tilak Varma (20) ensured there were no further hiccups, reaching the target with 6 balls to spare.
MI vs KKR Turning Point: Bumrah's Tactical Choke on Rinku Singh
While the batters grabbed the headlines, the game was arguably won in the final four overs of the KKR innings. With the dangerous Rinku Singh at the crease, KKR expected a late-inning explosion. However, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a clinical death-bowling.
Though Bumrah finished without a wicket, his economy of 8.75 in a game where the average was over 11 was the true match-turning factor.
