Aryna Sabalenka lost the biggest match of her year in front of a crowd she finally had on her side. She lost her composure in the process, too - smashing
a racquet, venting at a cameraman, choking back tears on stage. And then, minutes later, she found the exact right amount of defiance to remind everyone she's not done yet.
Elena Rybakina beat Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in 2 hours and 21 minutes, denying the two-time defending champion a shot at joining Serena Williams and Chris Evert as the only women in the professional era to win three straight US Open titles. It wasn't one bad set that decided it - Sabalenka broke back to force a decider in the second, but 35 unforced errors across the match eventually caught up with her, and Rybakina broke again in the third to close it out and claim her first Flushing Meadows title along with the World No. 1 ranking.
The Meltdown, Point by Point
Sabalenka's frustration surfaced early and often. Moments after Rybakina snatched the first of three breaks in the opening set, Sabalenka smashed a ball into the stands and picked up a code violation from the chair umpire. She never recovered that set.
