Kolkata Knight Riders' record signing Cameron Green has come under increasing scrutiny in IPL 2026 after a string of underwhelming performances with both
bat and ball, raising questions about whether the franchise has received adequate returns on its ₹25.2 crore investment.
The Australian all-rounder endured another difficult outing against Chennai Super Kings on April 14 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, conceding 30 runs in just two overs before being dismissed for a golden duck.
Green was the most expensive buy of the IPL 2026 auction and the third-most expensive player in league history, behind Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. However, five matches into the season, his contributions have remained limited.
Limited bowling role linked to injury management
One of the key factors affecting Green's impact this season has been his restricted bowling workload.
He did not bowl in Kolkata Knight Riders' first three matches of the campaign, with reports later confirming that Cricket Australia had advised workload management following a lower-back stress fracture that kept him out of bowling duties between September 2024 and October 2025.
Since returning to bowl, Green has delivered only two overs in each of his recent matches, indicating that he is still gradually working his way back to full fitness.
While he managed to claim a wicket in his comeback match against Lucknow Super Giants, he went wicketless in the following outing against Chennai Super Kings.
Cameron Green Batting inconsistency adds to concerns
Green's struggles with the bat have further intensified discussions around his form.
Across five innings this season, he has registered scores of 18, 2, 4, 32* and 0, reflecting a lack of consistency at the crease. His dismissals have varied - ranging from edging behind to being run out and clean bowled - highlighting technical and tactical challenges.
In one of his more notable innings, he scored an unbeaten 32 off 24 balls against Lucknow Super Giants, but required 15 deliveries to find his first boundary, underlining the pressure he has faced at the crease.
Former Australia captain Aaron Finch also noted a visible change in Green's approach, suggesting that he appeared more tentative compared to his earlier IPL seasons.
"There's a bit of panic, he's not looking the same as the past. Remember when he was at the top of the order for MI - how he had totally different intent," Finch said during broadcast analysis.
Cameron Green role uncertainty complicates team balance
Another challenge for Kolkata Knight Riders has been identifying the ideal batting position for Green.
Historically, he has been most effective at No. 3, where he has scored over 500 IPL runs at a strike rate close to 160. However, frequent shifts within the batting order this season have potentially affected his rhythm.
With the team struggling near the bottom of the points table, the franchise faces difficult decisions regarding team combinations and player roles.
Pressure of price tag adds to expectations
High-profile signings in the IPL often carry heightened expectations, particularly when teams invest heavily in all-rounders expected to contribute in multiple departments.
