Royal Challengers Bengaluru mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik believes Devdutt Padikkal could soon force his way back into India's plans if he continues
his impressive form in IPL 2026.
Devdutt Padikkal played a composed and crucial innings during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's dominant 43-run victory over Chennai Super Kings
, helping his side register their second consecutive win and climb to the top of the points table.Speaking on Star Sports' Amul Cricket Live, Karthik praised Padikkal's temperament and highlighted his growing maturity as both a batter and leader.
"If Devdutt Padikkal continues batting like this, it will be difficult to keep him out of the Indian team for long," Karthik said.
Devdutt Padikkal Key to RCB's Strong Total
Karthik pointed out that Padikkal's biggest strength during the innings was his patience, especially on a pitch where scoring freely early on wasn't easy.
"The first thing that stands out is his determination. On a pitch like this, when runs don't come easily at the start, many batters try to force a big shot and end up giving their wicket away," he explained.
Instead of taking unnecessary risks, Padikkal absorbed pressure before shifting gears at the right moment - a trait that often separates promising batters from dependable match-winners.
"Devdutt showed great courage to stay patient when the going was tough. Once he got that first boundary, you could see him switch gears," Karthik added.
"He's playing proper cricketing shots and hitting the ball with distance. "
Domestic Consistency Strengthens India Selection Case
Karthik also emphasised that Padikkal's IPL performance is backed by strong domestic credentials, making his case for national selection even stronger.
The 25-year-old has been a consistent performer across formats in domestic cricket, and his current IPL form signals a return to peak confidence.
"He has scored heavily in domestic cricket and we know he's a quality player," Karthik said.
That consistency, combined with improved temperament, could make Padikkal a strong contender for future international opportunities.
Leadership Growth Adds Another Dimension
Beyond his batting, Padikkal's growing leadership role within Karnataka cricket has also impressed the RCB camp.
Karthik noted that the left-hander's involvement in decision-making and team discussions reflects a maturing cricketer who is evolving beyond just individual performances.
"What's also impressive is the way he's stepping up as a leader in the Karnataka dressing room," Karthik said.
"Even at 25, he contributes with his ideas and leadership, and that's great to see. "
A Timely Return to Form
Padikkal's knock came at a crucial time for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, setting the platform for a commanding total that ultimately proved too much for Chennai Super Kings.
With RCB now enjoying strong momentum early in IPL 2026, Padikkal's form could play a defining role in the team's campaign - while also pushing his name back into conversations around India selection.
If his performances continue at this level, as Karthik suggested, the road back to the national side may not be far away.
