Ronaldo's performance combined leadership and mental resilience. Though no longer at peak athletic explosiveness, his intelligent movement created space for teammates and his clinical penalty showcased enduring quality under pressure.
"In the afternoon, I had a feeling the match would be decided by a penalty," Ronaldo said afterwards.
"We had been prepared for that since earlier in the day because I felt it was going to happen. My heart was racing, but I tried to trust what I was feeling, rely on my instincts, and believe that I was going to score. That's what I've always believed," he added.
The victory carries added emotional weight, coming on the anniversary of Diogo Jota's tragic passing. Portugal now prepare for a challenging round-of-16 encounter against Spain as they aim to get closer to their maiden World Cup title.
