Shubman Gill may have lived up to his promise of topping the run charts in the recently concluded India-England Test series, but that hasn't been enough
to maintain his place in the top 10 of the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings.
Ahead of the high-profile Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, Gill had expressed his desire to finish as the leading run-scorer. He delivered on that front, compiling a massive 754 runs over the five Tests.
However, a rare failure in the final Test at The Oval - where he couldn't contribute significantly - has cost him valuable rating points. As a result, the Indian Test captain has slipped to 13th position, now holding 725 points, just behind Pakistan's Saud Shakeel.
Gill's slide underlines how dynamic the ICC rankings are - they're updated weekly and fluctuate based on recent form and performances. A single poor outing, especially in a closely contested series, can have a considerable impact.
While Gill slipped, his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal took a significant leap forward. The young left-handed opener has stormed into the top five following a consistent series in which he scored 411 runs at an average of 41.10. His century in the second innings at The Oval was a key factor in India's thrilling six-run win and helped level the series 2-2. Jaiswal now ranks just behind stalwarts like Joe Root, Harry Brook, Kane Williamson, and Steve Smith.
Root, despite England losing the final Test, continues to top the batting charts with 868 points. Meanwhile, India's Rishabh Pant, who missed the Oval Test due to a foot injury, dropped to eighth with 768 points.
On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah remains the top-ranked Test bowler in the world with 889 rating points, despite missing the final Test. Though Siraj and Prasidh Krishna starred at The Oval, Bumrah remains the lone Indian in the top 10 bowlers.
