India are looking like a decent outfit in this T20 World Cup. With their overwhelming favourites image, Suryakumar Yadav and his team have so far racked
up two convincing victories.
They take on arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday in Colombo, a much which is finally set to take place after a long saga of uncertainty.
India are chasing multiple records in this World Cup. They aim to be not just the first team to win consecutive T20 titles, but challenges such as winning on home soil, first team to win 3 World Cup titles and becoming undisputed leaders in the T20 World Cup chart are also in their mission.
Although performance and consistency will be key in India's dream, fans have found an interesting edge to their kitty, which speculates an imaginary montage of India winning this World Cup. But no, its not related to any Indian player, rather its related to Zimbabwe beating Australia.
Zimbabwe beat Australia in T20 World Cup
On February 13, 2026, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo during Group B, Match 19 of the T20 World Cup, Zimbabwe stunned Australia again by posting 169/2 in 20 overs, driven by Brian Bennett's explosive unbeaten 64. Australia crumbled to 146 in 19.3 overs while chasing, undone by injuries and Blessing Muzarabani's fiery 4/17 spell.
This 23-run victory marked the first major shock of the 2026 tournament and preserved Zimbabwe's perfect 100% win record against Australia in T20 World Cups.
This result strikingly echoed a historic upset from the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup on September 12 at Newlands, Cape Town, in the group stage. There, Australia managed just 138/9 in 20 overs despite Brad Hodge's 35, as Zimbabwe's bowlers, led by Elton Chigumbura's 3/20-took control.
Brendan Taylor then anchored the chase with an unbeaten 60, guiding Zimbabwe to 139/5 in 19.5 overs. Prosper Utseya's side clinched a thrilling 5-wicket win over Ricky Ponting's defending champions in a low-scoring classic.
Zimbabwe stunned Australia in 1983
In the 1983 Prudential World Cup, Zimbabwe made their ODI World Cup debut and faced Australia twice in Group B. And in one of them, they stunned the Aussies.
In Nottingham, Zimbabwe posted 239/6 (60 overs) as Duncan Fletcher anchored the innings with an unbeaten 69 off 84 balls, supported by Kevin Curran's 27 and contributions from the top order. Graham Yallop took 2/28 for Australia. Australia could only manage 226 runs as Kepler Wessels top-scored with 76 off 130 balls, but Fletcher starred with the ball too, claiming 4/42 in 11 overs to restrict Australia.
Result: Zimbabwe won by 13 runs. This was a historic upset for Zimbabwe, stunning a strong Australian side in their first-ever World Cup match.
India to win T20 World Cup?
Interestingly, in 1983 and 2007, India won the respective tournaments. Kapil Dev led India's first-ever ODI World Cup win, while MS Dhoni's team India beat all the odds to win the T20 World Cup title in 2007. And as Zimbabwe have beaten the Aussies again, fans are in hope for another deja-vu, which will be far tougher to replicate in practical terms.
