Riyan Parag, the Rajasthan Royals captain, went on a ranting marathon in the post-match presentations, blasting away his teammates for a horrendous performance
against the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Sunday. For the 2008 IPL champions, it was the 4th defeat in the last 5 games, causing the team to slip to 5th position.
When asked about the performance in the pos match presentation, the RR skipper did not mince his words on the team's batting, bowling, and fielding. Parag also admitted that the team was not up to the mark in the game. He further said that if his team continues to disappoint in this fashion, they should not feature in the top 4 altogether.
Delhi's successful chase of 194 against Rajasthan has left RR's IPL 2026 playoffs hopes hanging. The defeat means Rajasthan now needs victories in both remaining league games to stay alive. RR stands fifth on the points table with six wins and six losses and no longer fully controls qualification.
Abishek Porel and KL Rahul set up Delhi's reply with a 105-run opening stand. Porel hit 51 from 31 balls, while Rahul scored 56 off 42. Delhi raced to 72 for no loss in the power play. A brief stumble followed, before captain Axar Patel's 34 off 18 sealed victory with four balls left.
IPL 2026 playoffs hopes shaped by Rajasthan batting effort
Earlier, Rajasthan reached 193 for 8, a total that looked competitive but ultimately fell short. Dhruv Jurel top-scored with 53, while captain Riyan Parag added 51. Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi again impressed, smashing 46 from 21 balls. Despite this platform, Rajasthan failed to reach the 220-230 total Parag later felt was required.
Asked by presenter Harsha Bhogle where Rajasthan lost control, Parag did not hold back. "Pretty much everything, actually. We were in a pretty good space after 14 overs. After I got out, we didn't capitalise on that. It was. It had to be 220-230, something like that. And as far as the bowling is concerned, I think we just weren't there. We weren't up to the mark. Ferreira wasn't a gamble. I know on TV it looks like a gamble, but then you've got two left-handers. I'd rather bowl Donovan, take a chance, than get Shanaka to bowl another over. Didn't really work out. (on the fielding) Very poor. I feel if you want to win a trophy, if you want to be contending every single year, you've got to be better than what we've done today. Extremely disappointed," he said.
IPL 2026 playoffs pressure after Rajasthan's dip in form
Parag admitted the display followed a poor stretch of form for Rajasthan across recent matches. "I feel we are a way better team than what we've played or shown in the last 4-5 games. But today was just, I feel. After coming from a break, I feel what we've shown today, energy-wise, skill-wise, execution-wise, is definitely not up to the mark. And if we keep on playing like this, we shouldn't be in contention for the top 4," he added.
Through the post-match discussion, Parag criticised Rajasthan's bowling and fielding as below the demanded standard. The captain said the group's overall energy, execution, and skills had dipped in the last four to five fixtures. Parag stressed that, if Rajasthan misses the IPL 2026 playoffs, the squad will have only themselves to blame.
Harsha Bhogle reminded Parag that Rajasthan can still reach the IPL 2026 playoffs by winning both remaining games. Parag underlined that relying on other results does not fit the leadership style. "Yeah, I think that's depending on a lot of other teams as well. That is not how I like to lead. That is not how I like to speak to my team as well. That, oh, we need these guys to keep on losing so we can win two games. We've had the opportunity, we've not taken it. So if we do not qualify, it's our fault. No one else's. And yeah, next two games, we'll see what we can do better and hopefully get two wins," said Parag in his straight talk.
Rajasthan now enters its final two league fixtures with little margin for error in the IPL 2026 playoffs race. Strong starts with bat and ball have faded too often in recent weeks. Unless Rajasthan sharpens their bowling, fielding, and late-innings batting, the season could end before the knockout stage.
