Kimi Antonelli could make Formula 1 history at the United States Grand Prix, with a victory at Circuit of The Americas potentially making him the youngest
world champion in the sport's history and ending Italy's 73-year wait for a drivers' title.
The Mercedes driver heads into the Austin race with 340 points, holding a 102-point advantage over teammate George Russell, who has 238. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton sits third with 229 points, with 150 still available across the remaining rounds.
At 20 years and 61 days old on race day in Austin, Antonelli has the opportunity to break Sebastian Vettel's record as the youngest Formula 1 world champion. Vettel won his maiden title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days old.
What Does Kimi Antonelli Need to Win the F1 Title in Austin?
Antonelli can secure the championship at the United States Grand Prix if he wins the race, Russell finishes ninth or lower, and Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.
That combination would give the Italian an unassailable lead in the standings, allowing him to clinch the title with races still remaining in the season.
Russell's expected engine penalty is reportedly set to come at the Las Vegas Grand Prix rather than Austin, meaning the championship outcome could depend on how the Mercedes teammates and Hamilton perform at Circuit of The Americas.
Youngest F1 World Champion in History
The most significant record Antonelli could break is Vettel's mark as the youngest Formula 1 world champion.
Vettel was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first title at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Antonelli would be just 20 years and 61 days old if he clinches the 2026 championship in Austin, beating the German's record by more than three years.
He would also become the first Formula 1 world champion born in the 2000s. Lando Norris, the most recent champion referenced in the report, was born in 1999.
Italy's First F1 Champion Since Alberto Ascari
A championship triumph would also end a 73-year drought for Italian drivers in Formula 1.
Alberto Ascari was the last Italian to win the drivers' championship, securing back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953. Before him, Giuseppe Farina became the sport's inaugural world champion in 1950.
Antonelli would become only the third Italian driver to win the Formula 1 world championship and the first Italian champion to do so without driving for an Italian team.
His achievements this season have already generated excitement among Italian motorsport fans. He became the first Italian driver in six decades to win at Monza, according to the supplied report.
How Many Race Wins Could Antonelli Have?
If Antonelli wins in Austin, he will reach nine career Grand Prix victories, moving four short of Ascari's Italian record of 13 wins.
However, winning the championship in his second Formula 1 season would not be unprecedented.
Lewis Hamilton won his first title in his second season in 2008, while Jacques Villeneuve achieved the same feat in 1997. Farina won the championship in his debut season in 1950.
The Records Antonelli Has Already Broken
Antonelli has already established himself as one of Formula 1's youngest record-setters during his first two seasons.
At the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, he became the youngest polesitter in F1 history, surpassing Vettel's previous record. He also became the youngest driver to lead the world championship after the Japanese Grand Prix, at 19 years and 216 days old.
His victory at Monza further strengthened his place in Italian motorsport history, ending a long wait for an Italian winner at the circuit.
A title in Austin would add the sport's most prominent age-related record to that list.
What Sebastian Vettel Said About Antonelli
Vettel has welcomed the possibility of Antonelli surpassing his record, acknowledging the Mercedes driver's impressive season and the work required to succeed in Formula 1.
"I'd be very happy for him. He's had an incredible year, and there's the old phrase that records are there to be broken. He still has a lot of years ahead of him to do so," Vettel said.
The four-time world champion also spoke positively about watching the championship battle unfold, while expressing hope that the other drivers could close the gap.
"I love the sport, so as a spectator, it's very exciting. I'd wish for the others to come back and be more in the mix, but I'm sort of independent and happy for them because I know how much work there is behind it to achieve it. And whoever will win will deserve it. "
With the championship within reach, Antonelli heads to Austin with the chance to make history in only his second season in Formula 1. A victory would not only secure the title but also establish a new benchmark for the youngest world champion in the sport.
