Atletico Madrid took firm control of their Champions League last-16 tie with Tottenham, winning 5-2 in the first leg at the Metropolitano and exploiting
early mistakes from debutant goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, leaving Igor Tudor’s side needing a major turnaround in the return fixture in London next week.
Kinsky’s first appearance in the Champions League collapsed inside 15 minutes, with the Tottenham goalkeeper directly at fault for three goals before being substituted for Guglielmo Vicario in the 17th minute, and although Spurs showed more resistance later in the match, the early damage proved decisive on a difficult night.
The opening breakthrough came in the sixth minute when Kinsky slipped while clearing, gifting possession to Julian Alvarez, whose pass allowed Marcos Llorente to drive a low shot into the bottom-left corner, and Atletico Madrid sensed Tottenham’s unease, pressing aggressively high up the pitch from that moment.
Atletico’s advantage doubled in the 14th minute when Antoine Griezmann produced a composed finish, and less than a minute later Kinsky miskicked a routine pass aimed at Kevin Danso straight to Alvarez, who walked the ball over the line, turning an already troubled Champions League debut into a severe personal setback.
Tudor substituted Kinsky almost immediately after the third goal, sending on Vicario, but the replacement was beaten within five minutes as Robin Le Normand’s header was ruled to have narrowly crossed the line, putting Atletico Madrid 4-0 ahead and leaving Tottenham facing a heavy first-leg Champions League deficit.
Tottenham finally hit back four minutes after Le Normand’s goal when Pedro Porro collected the ball and finished calmly, then returning captain Cristian Romero almost cut the margin further before half-time, rising at a corner and sending a powerful header against the post with Jan Oblak beaten.
Any hopes of a Tottenham comeback were checked 10 minutes after the restart when Griezmann released Alvarez with a clever touch, and the forward advanced at his own pace before placing the ball past Vicario, moments after Oblak had denied Richarlison’s close-range header at the other end.
Spurs did at least reflect their stronger second-half display on the scoreboard with 14 minutes left, as Oblak’s stray pass was intercepted by Porro, who quickly found substitute Dominic Solanke, and the forward drilled a fierce strike inside the near post to complete the scoring in Madrid.

Champions League numbers underline Atletico Madrid superiority
Atletico Madrid punished Tottenham’s errors without mercy, scoring four times in a Champions League first half for the first time in the club’s history, while also becoming only the second Spanish team to net four first-half goals in a knockout match, following long-time rivals Barcelona.
Alvarez’s influence extended beyond his two goals and one assist, as the Atletico Madrid forward moved to 30 Champions League goal involvements since debuting in the competition in 2022, a tally bettered in that period only by Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.
For Tottenham, the 5-2 defeat marked a sixth straight loss in all competitions, the longest losing streak in the club’s history, and the underlying figures offered little comfort, with Spurs posting an expected goals total of 1.41 from 11 attempts compared with Atletico Madrid’s 3.12 from the same number of shots.
