Thomas Tuchel is staying as England head coach through Euro 2028 after agreeing a new contract. The deal extends the relationship that began when the Football
Association appointed Tuchel in late 2024. Tuchel’s initial agreement had been due to expire after the upcoming World Cup.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham explained why the organisation moved early to secure Tuchel’s future with England. Bullingham said there was no stronger option for the national team job and highlighted Tuchel’s work across the World Cup qualifying campaign and with the existing squad structure.
Bullingham stated: "I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the Euros in 2028. He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see. There is simply no better candidate available in world football. With his big-game experience, knowledge and passion, he gives the squad the very best chance for successthis summer and with the once-in-a generation Euro being hosted on these shores in two years'time. "
Tuchel, formerly of Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, officially started work as England manager in January 2025. Under Tuchel, England became the first European nation to secure a spot at this year’s World Cup. The team completed qualifying with a perfect record and showed strong defensive discipline.
| Team | Competition | Qualification record | Goals conceded |
|---|---|---|---|
| England | World Cup 1990 qualifiers | Qualified | 0 |
| England | This year's World Cup qualifiers | 100% wins | 0 |
During this qualifying run, England won every match and did not concede a single goal. It is only the second occasion England have reached a World Cup while keeping a clean sheet throughout qualifying, repeating an achievement last seen before the 1990 tournament.
Tuchel expressed satisfaction at the contract extension and the chance to guide England through the World Cup and into Euro 2028. Tuchel said: "I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud. "

Results under Tuchel have been strong, with England winning 11 consecutive competitive fixtures. Those performances helped shape FA confidence in extending the contract beyond the World Cup. The run also adds momentum heading into a home Euro 2028, which the FA views as a rare opportunity.
Thomas Tuchel England Euro 2028 World Cup context and club interest
Tuchel’s work with England has drawn attention at club level. Tuchel had been mentioned as a possible option for Manchester United in the summer, when the club turned to Michael Carrick only on an interim basis. The new England agreement ends that immediate speculation.
The FA now has continuity in place with Tuchel leading England at this year’s World Cup and into Euro 2028 on home soil. England’s perfect qualification record, long winning streak and strong unity within the squad create high expectations, while the contract extension gives the project clear direction.
