Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup champions for the second time after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a one-sided final
at the sold-out MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday (July 19).
Ferran Torres emerged as Spain's hero with the decisive strike in the 105th minute, converting Nico Williams' assist to send La Roja into ecstasy and end Lionel Messi's dream of signing off his World Cup career with back-to-back titles.
The reigning European champions produced a near-flawless performance to reclaim the World Cup crown for the first time since their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010. Coincidentally, global music icon Shakira performed the tournament's official anthem in both 2010 and 2026, bookending Spain's two greatest moments on football's biggest stage.
For Argentina, however, it was an afternoon of frustration and heartbreak. In front of over 82,500 spectators-most of them draped in sky blue and white hoping to witness one final masterpiece from Messi-the defending champions never found their rhythm.
Spain Dominate From Start to Finish
From the opening whistle, Spain controlled every facet of the contest. Luis de la Fuente's side monopolised possession, dictated the tempo and repeatedly stretched Argentina's defence with fluid passing and relentless movement. Argentina, usually so composed in possession, were forced deep into their own half for most of the contest.
The statistics reflected Spain's overwhelming superiority.
They attempted 20 shots to Argentina's two, registered 12 efforts on target, enjoyed 66 per cent possession, completed 852 passes at 90 per cent accuracy, and forced Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano MartÍnez into 11 saves.
Remarkably, Argentina failed to register a single shot during regulation time, becoming the first team in FIFA World Cup final history to go through 90 minutes without attempting a shot.
Messi found little space as Spain's midfield and defence suffocated every Argentine attack before it could develop. Argentina's task became even more difficult late in the contest after being reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card in the 90th minute. Having already been booked earlier, the midfielder picked up another caution within the span of 10 minutes, resulting in a red card and his dismissal.
Down to 10 players and already struggling to break down Spain's organised defence, the La Albiceleste had little chance of mounting a comeback as La Roja comfortably controlled extra time before Ferran Torres struck the decisive winner.
Ferran Torres Delivers the Decisive Blow
After dominating for nearly two hours without reward, Spain finally found the breakthrough moments before the interval of extra time.
Nico Williams burst down the flank before picking out substitute Ferran Torres inside the area. Torres made no mistake, calmly finishing in the 105th minute to send the Spanish bench into wild celebrations.
The goal proved decisive as Spain comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to lift football's biggest prize once again.
Torres also entered the history books by becoming only the second substitute ever to score the winning goal in a FIFA World Cup final, joining Germany's Mario Götze, who achieved the feat against Argentina in 2014.
Messi's Last Dance Ends in Heartbreak
Much of the build-up centred around Lionel Messi, widely expected to be playing his final World Cup match.
The Argentine captain arrived hoping to add another World Cup medal after inspiring his country to glory four years earlier. Instead, he endured one of the quietest finals of his illustrious international career as Spain's relentless pressing denied him time and space. The disappointment did not end there.
Messi also missed out on the tournament's Golden Boot, with France captain Kylian Mbappe finishing as the competition's leading scorer.
Argentina's defeat also meant they finished as World Cup runners-up for the fourth time (1930, 1990, 2014 and 2026)-joint-most alongside Germany.
Spain's Golden Generation Continues Its Era
Spain's triumph further underlined the emergence of another golden generation.
Already reigning European champions, La Roja have now added the FIFA World Cup to their collection, completing a remarkable Euro-World Cup double.
Their unbeaten streak now stretches to 38 matches, the longest ever recorded by a European or South American national team.
At the heart of the victory was teenage defender Pau CubarsÍ, who produced one of the finest defensive displays seen in a World Cup final. His composure belied his age as he controlled proceedings from the back throughout the contest.
Another teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, added the biggest prize in world football to an already glittering young career.
At just 19 years old, Yamal's trophy cabinet now includes: FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, Three La Liga titles, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup.
History continues to arrive early for one of football's brightest talents.
A Fully Deserved Triumph
Spain were unquestionably the better side throughout the final. They dominated possession, created chance after chance and rarely allowed Argentina to threaten. While MartÍnez repeatedly kept Argentina alive with a string of outstanding saves, Ferran Torres' extra-time strike finally broke the resistance.
By the final whistle, the celebrations had engulfed the Spanish players, coaching staff and thousands of travelling supporters.
Sixteen years after conquering the world in Johannesburg, Spain once again stood atop world football-deservedly so after producing one of the most commanding World Cup final performances in recent memory.
