The IPL 2026 playoff race has finally reached the stage where every result is beginning to reshape the table.
For most of the season, the top four remained
relatively stable. But with only a handful of league matches remaining, momentum swings, net run rate battles, and direct clashes between contenders have turned the qualification race into one of the tightest in recent years.
While some teams are now one win away from sealing qualification, others are depending on complicated combinations and hoping rivals slip up at the perfect moment.
Here is how the playoff picture currently looks for every team.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are almost through already
Sunrisers Hyderabad have looked like the most complete team in IPL 2026 for large stretches of the tournament.
Their aggressive batting approach, led by one of the strongest top orders in the competition, has consistently allowed them to dominate games early. Unlike previous seasons, SRH have also found enough bowling control to defend totals and close matches under pressure.
With 14 points already on the board and a strong net run rate of +0.737, SRH need just one more win from their final three games to almost certainly qualify for the playoffs.
At this stage, their bigger focus may actually be the top-two race rather than qualification itself. If they win all three remaining games, they could comfortably finish in the top two and secure the Qualifier 1 advantage.
Punjab Kings suddenly have pressure again
Punjab Kings looked unstoppable earlier in the season after racing to six wins in their opening seven matches.
But three consecutive defeats have dramatically changed the atmosphere around their campaign.
The batting remains dangerous, but Punjab's middle overs have slowed recently and their bowlers have started leaking runs at crucial moments. The good news for PBKS is that they still control their own destiny.
With 13 points from 10 matches, two wins from their final four games should be enough to take them into the playoffs.
However, after spending weeks looking like genuine table-toppers, Punjab are now fighting to avoid getting dragged into a crowded mid-table battle.
RCB's net run rate could become their biggest weapon
Royal Challengers Bengaluru may currently sit third, but their real advantage lies in their enormous net run rate.
At +1.234, RCB possess one of the healthiest NRRs among all playoff contenders, which could become decisive if multiple teams finish level on points.
RCB need two wins from their final four games to stay comfortably inside the top four. The recent defeats have slowed their momentum slightly, but compared to several teams around them, Bengaluru still have breathing room.
And in a season where qualification could easily come down to decimal points, their NRR cushion may eventually prove priceless.
Rajasthan Royals IPL 2026 Playoff dreams remains steady
Rajasthan Royals continue to quietly stay in control despite not attracting as much attention as some of the bigger franchises.
Under Riyan Parag, RR have looked balanced throughout IPL 2026. Their batting has consistently delivered enough runs, while their bowling attack has remained disciplined in pressure moments.
Like RCB, Rajasthan sit on 12 points and need two wins from their final four matches to strongly position themselves for qualification.
Perhaps RR's biggest strength right now is clarity. Unlike several teams still experimenting with combinations, Rajasthan know their strongest XI and their players understand their roles clearly.
Gujarat Titans are still alive but their NRR remains dangerous
Gujarat Titans sit just outside the top four despite winning six matches already. The reason? Their negative net run rate.
GT have repeatedly found themselves in close finishes and narrow defeats, which has left them vulnerable despite staying competitive throughout the tournament.
They still need two wins from four matches to realistically stay in the playoff race, but unlike teams above them, Gujarat probably cannot afford heavy defeats anymore.
If several teams finish on 16 points, GT's weaker NRR could become a serious problem.
Chennai Super Kings' late IPL 2026 Playoff revival
A few weeks ago, Chennai Super Kings looked almost certain to miss the playoffs. Now, after a strong mid-season recovery, they have dragged themselves back into contention.
The resurgence has coincided with improved batting stability and excellent form from Sanju Samson. CSK suddenly look calmer, more structured, and far more dangerous than they did earlier in the tournament.
Still, their qualification equation remains difficult.
With 10 points from 10 games, Chennai likely need to win at least three of their final four matches to realistically reach the playoffs.
One more defeat could put enormous pressure on the rest of their campaign.
Kolkata Knight Riders are suddenly becoming dangerous
Kolkata Knight Riders may sit lower on the table, but they now carry momentum few teams would want to face.
KKR spent much of IPL 2026 searching for combinations, constantly changing batting positions and struggling for rhythm. But after three consecutive wins, they finally appear to have found clarity.
The problem is that they left the comeback very late.
KKR now likely need to win all four of their remaining games to realistically stay alive in the playoff race. Even then, they may still need results elsewhere to favour them.
But among all the teams outside the top four, KKR perhaps look the most capable of producing a dramatic late surge.
Delhi Capitals are almost out of margin for error
Delhi Capitals have endured another frustratingly inconsistent campaign.
Like previous seasons, DC started strongly before losing momentum midway through the tournament. Their inability to build consistency at home has left them in a deeply uncomfortable position.
With only 8 points from 11 matches, Delhi can now only reach a maximum of 14 points.
That means even winning all remaining matches may not guarantee qualification.
DC now need:
- a perfect finish,
- major collapses from teams above them,
- and favourable net run rate swings elsewhere.
At this point, their playoff hopes are hanging by mathematics more than momentum.
Mumbai Indians IPL 2026 Playoff hopes barely alive
Mumbai Indians have never fully recovered from their disastrous mid-season collapse.
A team packed with international stars has somehow managed only three wins from 10 games, leaving them with just 6 points and a damaging NRR of -0.649.
Even if MI win every remaining game, they can only reach 14 points. Historically, teams have occasionally qualified with 14 points - but this season looks too crowded for that to feel realistic.
Mumbai now require not only a perfect finish, but also a complete collapse from multiple rivals around them.
Lucknow Super Giants are almost relying on miracles now
Lucknow Super Giants never truly found rhythm in IPL 2026. They failed to build winning streaks, struggled for bowling consistency, and repeatedly lost key moments in close games.
Like Mumbai, LSG can also only reach a maximum of 14 points.
And with an even worse NRR than MI, their realistic chances are extremely slim.
Mathematically, they are still alive.
Realistically, they now need:
- to win every remaining game,
- massive NRR improvements,
- and several results elsewhere to collapse perfectly in their favour.
At this stage, survival is still possible on paper - but the playoffs already feel very far away.
