India's preparations for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka go far beyond squad selection. With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out, Washington Sundar unavailable
for the opening Test and spin expected to dominate proceedings, the team has put together one of its most comprehensive bowling preparation plans in recent years.
Rather than simply replacing injured players, India has built a strategy designed to prepare batters for every type of bowling challenge they could face in Sri Lanka.
Preparing for every spin variation
The clearest sign of that approach is India's choice of net bowlers.
Instead of relying on one or two spinners in the nets, the team has assembled four bowlers who collectively replicate almost every major style of spin.

- Vipraj Nigam- Right-arm leg-spin
- Shivang Kumar- Left-arm wrist spin (chinaman)
The combination means India's batters will face deliveries spinning away and into both right and left-handers throughout training.
Sri Lankan pitches have traditionally rewarded spin from multiple angles rather than one dominant style, making variety as important as quality.
Building on recent preparations
This isn't a sudden move.
Ahead of the Afghanistan Test, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal had already been working extensively against specialist spin in Mumbai. Those sessions have now been expanded into a full-tour strategy, with the four net bowlers travelling alongside the squad.
The aim is to recreate match conditions before India even steps onto the field in Galle.
A balanced spin attack
The net bowlers also complement India's own frontline spin attack.
Ravindra Jadeja returns as the experienced left-arm spinner, while Kuldeep Yadav brings wrist-spin variation. Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain add further depth after Washington Sundar was ruled out of the opening Test.
Having multiple styles available in both the squad and the practice nets ensures batters are constantly exposed to different release points, trajectories and angles.
Solving the pace problem
India's bowling blueprint isn't limited to spin.
The biggest setback came with Jasprit Bumrah's withdrawal after persistent discomfort in his left knee. Rather than turning to an experienced replacement, selectors opted for Jammu & Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi.
The decision rewards one of domestic cricket's standout performers after he claimed 60 wickets during Jammu & Kashmir's Ranji Trophy-winning campaign before impressing for India A in Sri Lanka with the Kookaburra ball.
Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are expected to lead the pace attack, while Gurnoor Brar provides another seam option.
Why the net bowlers matter
For Harsh Dubey, Tanush Kotian, Vipraj Nigam and Shivang Kumar, the tour is unlikely to result in an international debut.
Instead, it represents the next step in India's player development model.
The BCCI has increasingly used overseas tours to expose promising domestic performers to the international environment, allowing them to train alongside senior players, understand team routines and experience overseas conditions before earning a national cap.
At the same time, the senior squad benefits from facing high-quality domestic bowlers capable of replicating the opposition's strengths.

Viewed together, India's planning reflects a broader strategy rather than isolated decisions.
The pace attack has been reshaped following Bumrah's injury with the inclusion of Auqib Nabi, while the spin department has been strengthened through both squad selection and specialist net bowlers.
Instead of preparing for one or two match-ups, India has created a practice environment that covers every major spin variation likely to be encountered in Sri Lanka.
For a series expected to be decided on turning pitches, India's message is clear: preparation begins long before the first ball is bowled.
