Novak Djokovic was involved in a heated exchange with Alexander Zverev and chair umpire Adel Nour during their China Open 2026 quarter-final in Beijing
on Sunday (October 4), after a disputed video review resulted in a point being replayed.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion questioned the interpretation of the hindrance rule after Zverev complained about a changing advertising screen, despite continuing to play the point before raising his objection.
Djokovic described the decision as one of the most ridiculous rule interpretations he had encountered, arguing that allowing players to challenge a distraction retrospectively could create a problematic precedent.
What Happened During the Djokovic-Zverev Controversy?
The dispute unfolded during the opening set when Zverev complained that an advertising panel at the side of the court had changed images and distracted him.
However, the German had continued playing before approaching the umpire to raise the issue. Djokovic maintained that his opponent should have stopped immediately if the screen had genuinely affected his concentration.

Chair umpire Adel Nour subsequently initiated a video review to determine whether the advertising panel had changed during the point.
According to one account of the incident, the footage showed the advertising boards changing before the point rather than during it. Nevertheless, officials accepted Zverev's complaint and ordered the point to be replayed instead of awarding it to Djokovic.
The decision prompted an immediate protest from the Serbian, who challenged both the timing of Zverev's complaint and the officials' interpretation of the rules.
What Did Djokovic Say to Zverev and the Chair Umpire?
Djokovic's principal objection concerned the possibility of players completing a rally before retrospectively claiming that an external distraction had affected them.
Zverev defended his actions by explaining that he had been uncertain whether he was permitted to request a review.
"I didn't know about the challenge, that's why I came to him and asked," the German explained.
Djokovic was unconvinced, arguing that the complaint should have been raised as soon as the alleged distraction occurred.
"This must be the most stupid change of rules I've ever heard in my life. It makes no sense," Djokovic said.
He illustrated his objection with a hypothetical scenario involving a lengthy rally.
"We could play a 30-shot rally and he could lose the point and say: 'OK, I'm going to challenge now'. "
The Serbian eventually returned to the court, laughing in apparent disbelief as he prepared to replay the disputed point.
Why Was the Point Replayed? Tennis Hindrance Rule Explained
The controversy centred on the application of tennis's hindrance provisions and the use of video review to assess an alleged external distraction.
A hindrance occurs when something interferes with a player's ability to execute a shot. Depending on the circumstances, an external interruption can justify replaying a point rather than awarding it to either player.
In this instance, Zverev claimed that a changing LED advertising panel had distracted him. Officials reviewed the incident and subsequently ordered a replay.
However, Djokovic's objection raised a separate procedural question: how long can a player continue participating in a rally before claiming that an earlier distraction affected their performance?
He argued that allowing a player to finish the point and challenge only after making an error could create opportunities for retrospective complaints.
There is an important distinction between determining whether a distraction occurred and deciding whether a player raised the complaint at an appropriate time.
The accounts provided do not establish the precise regulation or tournament-specific video-review provision invoked by the umpire. Consequently, the incident alone does not establish that tennis has introduced a new rule permitting players to challenge distractions after completing a rally.
Rather, the disagreement concerned how the officials applied the available review procedure to Zverev's complaint.
Why Did the Decision Cause So Much Confusion?
The incident also surprised the television commentary team, who questioned the unusual sequence of events.
"I've never seen that before. Obviously the VAR is there to be used," Sky Sports commentator Nick Lester observed.
Former British player Annabel Croft similarly expressed surprise at the prospect of replaying the point following the review.
The controversy highlighted the difficulties officials can encounter when technology is used to assess incidents involving subjective elements, particularly when the alleged distraction and the player's subsequent actions must both be considered.
While video footage can establish when an advertising panel changed, determining whether that change constituted a hindrance and whether the complaint was made in time involves interpreting the applicable rules.
What Happened in the Djokovic vs Zverev Match?
Despite the confrontation, Zverev maintained his composure to claim the opening set 6-4.
Djokovic subsequently responded by winning the second set by the same scoreline, forcing a deciding set in their quarter-final encounter.
The contest carried considerable significance for both players. Zverev entered the tournament as world No. 2 and was pursuing his ambitions of finishing the season at the top of the rankings, while Djokovic was seeking to extend his successful history at the event.
The winner was scheduled to face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals after the Russian defeated Francisco Cerundolo in his quarter-final.
At the stage covered by the supplied reports, the match was level at one set apiece, with the deciding set still to determine which player would advance.
