Chennai Super Kings could face some difficult retention decisions ahead of the IPL 2027 auction after an inconsistent 2026 campaign. While a squad overhaul
remains a possibility, the five-time champions may choose to back certain players rather than release them after one season.
From expensive young recruits to overseas options who struggle for consistency, here are four CSK players who could surprisingly retain their places ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
Kartik Sharma
Kartik Sharma is an interesting retention candidate despite a mixed first IPL season. CSK spend ₹14.20 crore to secure the young wicketkeeper-batter at the previous auction, placing significant expectations on his shoulders.
The 20-year-old scores 295 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32.78 and a strike rate of 136.57. While the numbers are respectable, CSK could expect greater consistency and a more explosive impact from such an expensive acquisition.
However, his age, domestic potential and ability to bat in the middle order could convince the franchise to give him another season.
Dewald Brevis
Dewald Brevis scores 151 runs in 11 matches during IPL 2026, averaging 18.88. His strike rate of 127.97 also falls short of expectations for an overseas middle-order batter.
Nevertheless, the South African youngster offers considerable potential. His ability to attack spin and provide middle-order firepower could persuade CSK to back him for another season rather than search for a replacement.
Matthew Short
Matthew Short does not get an extended run in the CSK playing XI, featuring in just three matches and scoring 60 runs at an average of 20.00 and a strike rate of 117.65.
The Australian offers batting flexibility and off-spin options. CSK could consider retaining him as a utility overseas all-rounder, particularly if they believe he can contribute more with a consistent role.
Rahul Chahar
Rahul Chahar is another player whose future could attract attention. The leg-spinner features in just one match against Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, conceding 46 runs without taking a wicket in his four overs.
Despite the expensive outing, CSK could consider retaining him as an Indian spin-bowling option. Quality domestic leg-spinners are valuable in the IPL, and another opportunity could help Chahar rediscover his rhythm.
