WTC Points Table: Australia tightened their grip on the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings after a clinical five-wicket victory over England
in the final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 8. Chasing 160 on the last day, the hosts crossed the line inside 32 overs, sealing a 4-1 series triumph and strengthening their position at the top of the table.
England's second-innings score of 342 had given them faint hope of staging an upset, but Australia's top order ensured there were no major hiccups. Travis Head (29) and Jake Weatherald (34) got the chase rolling with a brisk 62-run stand in just 63 deliveries.
Although both fell to Josh Tongue before lunch, the early momentum proved decisive. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the innings before Alex Carey (16) and Cameron Green (22*) calmly guided Australia home in the afternoon session.
The win not only secured the Ashes but also boosted Australia's WTC percentage further, moving their PCT% from 85.71 to an impressive 87.5. With seven wins in eight matches so far this cycle, the reigning Test champions appear well on course for another shot at the WTC title in 2027.
England, meanwhile, continue to slide. Their PCT% has now dropped from 35.19 to 31.66, leaving them stranded at seventh place. With only three wins from ten Tests in this cycle, their route to the WTC final looks increasingly narrow. To stay alive in the race, Ben Stokes's men will need near-perfect results in the remainder of their fixtures - any further slip could effectively shut the door on their hopes of reaching the final for the first time.
With Australia pulling away at the top, attention now shifts to the chasing pack - India, Pakistan, South Africa, and the West Indies - all of whom remain firmly in contention as the WTC race heats up. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and New Zealand continue to fight through mixed results, but the margins are shrinking quickly.
