Vaibhav Suryavanshi's meteoric rise in Indian cricket is something to be in awe of, but his coach Manish Ojha, who has been the mentor of the young prodigy,
believes his disciple needs a fair share of policing to reach the highest standard.
As reported by MyKhel, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is training at BCCI Centre of Excellence, which has been curated just for him. As his coach Manish Ojha talked with MyKhel in an exclusive chat, he opened up the aspects of batting Vaibhav needs to improve to be successful at the international level.
Although the 14-year-old has been smashing across formats, from IPL to India U19, his coach assesses the red ball performance requires more consistency.
"Consistency is an area where Vaibhav will have to work. The way he plays aggressively from the very first ball, these are positive points which has benefited him in ODI and T20 formats. But in the longer format of the game, Vaibhav will have to improve. "
"The way he has performed in limited overs, it hasn't been the same in multiday matches. He is batting well. He is attacking. He scores runs very quickly, but needs to be consistent. In England, he performed in just one inning out of four matches, and he needs to improve on that. He will have to go up to 70-80% in the consistency rate. If he plays 10 innings, then he should have a performance of 7-8 innings," the coach said.
Vaibhav amassed 252 runs in his debut IPL season for Rajasthan Royals. The Bihar-born became the youngest to play in the IPL and racked up runs against top bowlers, smashing them across the park. And despite the holes in his batting aspects, coach believes the youngster will gradually adapt more to the longest format of the game as he gets more exposure in coming days.
"He will gradually adopt all these things. And with him, since he came out of junior cricket, he has been getting more T20 and one day matches. For example, under-19 ODI matches or IPL matches. The format in which you play more, your batting style becomes more oriented towards it. So, as he gets to play more multi-day matches, I hope that he will be consistent in that as well. "
Vaibhav Suryavanshi adhering to Diet
Speaking about the diet of the young player, Ojha was pretty blunt. The coach says BCCI has curated a proper diet for the player and despite the cravings, Vaibhav has adhered to that for optimizing his skills.
"This is normal. In the diet chart, Vaibhav's favorite food is missing. But when you have to follow strict diet manual, you have to leave the old habits and adopt new things. It is for his development only, and Vaibhav is maintaining that. "
