Against the odds, nursing a torn meniscus and barely fit enough to train, the Brazilian forward returned to his boyhood club and carried them away from the threat of relegation for a second straight year.
Heading into the final match of the season, Santos were staring at the possibility of disaster. Only after securing safety did Neymar reveal what he had pushed through. "For weeks I could barely play," he said. "If it weren't for the people close to me, I wouldn't have been able to get on the pitch. Now I need to rest - and then have surgery. "
His comeback was never meant to be rushed. Neymar was still recovering from the ACL injury suffered during the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. But with Santos desperate and the clock ticking, he made a decision that was as emotional as it was personal: he played anyway.
