In yet another surprise move ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have roped in West Indies all-rounder Sherfane
Rutherford from Gujarat Titans (GT) through a direct trade.
The 27-year-old power-hitter joins MI at his existing price of ₹2.6 crore, marking the franchise's second major acquisition following the recent trade of Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants.
Rutherford, who brings both explosive batting and handy medium pace to the table, has quietly built a strong T20 resume in recent years. A regular in West Indies' T20 setup, he has represented his country in 44 matches and holds the record for the highest sixth-wicket partnership in T20Is - a monumental 139-run stand with Andre Russell against Australia in Perth.
In the IPL, Rutherford has had stints with several franchises, including Delhi Capitals (2019), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2022), and Kolkata Knight Riders (2024). He also spent time with Mumbai Indians in 2020 but did not get a chance to feature in the playing XI. However, his performances in IPL 2025 with Gujarat Titans showcased his evolution as a finisher. Scoring 291 runs in 13 matches at an impressive strike rate of 157.30 and an average of 32.33, he proved to be a reliable option in the middle and lower order, often turning games around with his clean hitting.
With this trade, Mumbai Indians have strengthened their finishing department - an area they have been looking to fortify since Kieron Pollard's retirement.
With two high-profile trades - Shardul Thakur and now Sherfane Rutherford - Mumbai Indians have made their intent clear ahead of the IPL 2026 season: a renewed focus on all-round depth and explosive lower-order firepower. As of now there is no news on Arjun Tendulkar as it was earlier reported that the Mumbai man will go to Lucknow Super Giants as part of the Shardul Thakur deal.
