Ishan Kishan produced a fielding masterclass in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final, pulling off two stunning catches that pushed New Zealand onto the back
foot during their chase at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
After India posted a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, the defending champions needed early breakthroughs with the ball - and Kishan delivered exactly that in the field.
His two athletic efforts removed dangerous batters Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert, helping India tighten their grip on the high-pressure final.
Ishan Kishan diving catch gives Bumrah early breakthrough
India struck almost immediately when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a wicket with the first ball of the innings.
Bumrah bowled a 121 km/h length delivery around leg stump that tempted Rachin Ravindra into a flick toward the leg side. The shot came off the thick inside edge and looped into the air toward deep fine leg.
Ishan Kishan sprinted forward from the boundary and launched into a full-length dive to complete a spectacular catch.
The ball briefly popped loose as he hit the ground, but Kishan held on to secure the dismissal. Ravindra walked back for 1 off 2 balls, leaving New Zealand under pressure early in the powerplay.
Bumrah celebrated wildly before embracing Kishan as the Ahmedabad crowd erupted.
Boundary brilliance removes Seifert
Kishan produced another moment of magic in the 8.1 over when Varun Chakaravarthy drew a mistake from Tim Seifert.
Seifert, who had been counter-attacking aggressively with a quickfire 52 off 26 balls, attempted to pull a short delivery but skewed it toward deep midwicket.
Kishan raced across to his right, carefully judging the trajectory as he approached the boundary rope. Realising he could lose balance, he cleverly controlled the catch while staying inside the field of play and completed the grab.
The dismissal ended Seifert's dangerous innings and left New Zealand struggling at 72/5, pushing India closer to the title.
India's huge total sets up high-pressure chase
Earlier in the evening, India had piled on the runs with a dominant batting display.
Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off 46 balls, smashing eight sixes and five fours. His partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who struck 52 off just 21 balls, laid the foundation for one of the biggest totals ever in a T20 World Cup final.
Ishan Kishan also contributed with the bat, scoring 54, while Shivam Dube's unbeaten 26 off 8 balls ensured India finished strongly.
The hosts raced to 92 in the powerplay and eventually set New Zealand a daunting target of 256.
India tighten their grip on the final
New Zealand's chase never fully recovered after the early blows.
At one stage, the Black Caps were 83/5 after nine overs, needing more than 170 runs from just 66 balls as the required rate climbed above 15 runs per over.
Kishan's fielding brilliance ensured India maintained the momentum, sending the packed Ahmedabad crowd into a frenzy.
With two spectacular catches and a half-century with the bat earlier, Kishan emerged as one of the standout performers in a final where India moved closer to a historic third T20 World Cup title.
