India's dominant ODI series sweep over Afghanistan and Yashasvi Jaiswal's record-breaking rise headline another busy day in world sport. While Shubman
Gill celebrated his first ODI series win as captain, Jaiswal continued to strengthen his case as India's next long-term white-ball star with yet another century.
At the FIFA World Cup, the Netherlands set a historic unbeaten record, Germany booked their place in the knockout rounds thanks to super-sub Deniz Undav, and CuraÇao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced one of the greatest goalkeeping displays in tournament history. Indian football also made headlines after the AIFF approved a proposal to change its name to the Football Federation of Bharat.
1. India complete Afghanistan whitewash as Jaiswal shines again
India wrapped up a dominant 3-0 ODI series sweep against Afghanistan with a comprehensive nine-wicket victory in Chennai.
Prasidh Krishna starred with a five-wicket haul as Afghanistan were comfortably restricted, while Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav provided excellent support with the ball. The chase was then turned into a procession by Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who shared a commanding 170-run opening partnership.
Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 110, registering his second ODI century, while Rohit contributed a fluent 79 before Shreyas Iyer completed the formalities. The series victory further strengthens India's preparations ahead of a busy white-ball calendar.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal creates unique Indian ODI record
Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his meteoric rise by becoming the fastest Indian to score two ODI centuries.
The left-hander reached the milestone in fewer than seven innings, surpassing previous benchmarks held by Shikhar Dhawan, Kedar Jadhav, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill. His unbeaten 110 against Afghanistan followed the century he scored against South Africa in late 2025.
Remarkably, both hundreds came after Jaiswal entered the side as a replacement rather than a first-choice selection, further underlining his ability to seize opportunities at the highest level.
3. Shubman Gill joins elite ODI company after series triumph
The Afghanistan series was significant for more than just the result, as it marked Shubman Gill's first ODI series victory as India's captain.
Gill also claimed the Player of the Series award, taking his tally to six in ODI cricket. That moves him level with Rohit Sharma and places him among an elite group of Indian batters, with only Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni ahead of him.
Having already established himself as India's premier ODI batter, the 26-year-old continues to add leadership credentials to an increasingly impressive resume.
4. Netherlands break World Cup unbeaten record in style
The Netherlands produced one of the standout performances of the World Cup so far, thrashing Sweden 5-1 and setting a new tournament record in the process.
The victory extended the Dutch unbeaten World Cup run to 14 matches, surpassing Brazil's previous record of 13. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scored braces as Ronald Koeman's side bounced back emphatically from their opening draw against Japan.
The result also sends the Netherlands to the top of Group F and firmly establishes them among the early contenders in the tournament.
5. Germany reach knockout stage as super-sub Undav delivers again
Germany secured qualification for the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2014 after a 2-1 comeback win over Ivory Coast.
Deniz Undav once again proved decisive from the bench, scoring both goals after being introduced in the second half. The Stuttgart striker now has three goals and two assists in just two tournament appearances and has become one of the stories of the competition.
The victory ends a run of group-stage disappointments for Germany, who failed to progress in both 2018 and 2022.
6. CuraÇao's Eloy Room equals World Cup saves record
CuraÇao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a historic performance to earn his nation its first-ever World Cup point in a goalless draw against Ecuador.
The 37-year-old made 15 saves, equalling the World Cup record set by United States goalkeeper Tim Howard in 2014. Room's display came just days after CuraÇao suffered a 7-1 defeat to Germany and is already being described as one of the finest goalkeeping performances in tournament history.
The draw leaves Ecuador facing a difficult path to qualification heading into their final group match.
7. Harmanpreet Kaur set for historic 200th T20I appearance
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur will become the first cricketer in history to play 200 women's T20 internationals when she leads India against South Africa.
The milestone comes more than 17 years after her debut and further cements her status as one of the most influential figures in women's cricket. India's coaching staff and opponents alike have praised her longevity, leadership and impact on younger players.
The clash against South Africa is also likely to determine which side progresses from a tightly contested World Cup group.
8. AIFF begins process to become Football Federation of Bharat
The All India Football Federation has formally begun the process of changing its name to the Football Federation of Bharat.
The proposal was approved during a Special General Body Meeting and will now require clearance from the Sports Ministry and FIFA before any change can take effect. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey said the move is part of a wider process and cited examples such as TÜrkiye and Czechia adopting new international identities.
The federation also approved September 4 as the proposed start date for the 2026-27 ISL season.
9. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faces biggest test yet in India A final
For perhaps the first time in his young career, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi enters a major match with questions beyond his talent.
The 15-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the India A tri-series but has yet to convert any of his starts into a major score. Sunday's final against Sri Lanka A presents an opportunity to answer those questions while also responding to the tension that followed the dramatic Super Over defeat earlier in the tournament.
The focus is no longer on whether Sooryavanshi can dominate attacks, but whether he can build and control a match-defining innings under pressure.
