Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants in Match 19 of IPL 2026 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium
in Lucknow on Sunday.
Gill called correctly at the toss as Gujarat chose to chase, sticking with the same playing XI for the afternoon clash. Explaining the decision, Gill highlighted the team's preference to chase and their focus on improving match control.
"We want to bowl first because we prefer chasing. We're looking to play better cricket so that the match doesn't always go to the last over," Gill said at the toss.
Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant confirmed that his side would have been comfortable batting first regardless of the toss result, pointing to the nature of the Ekana surface.
"The way wickets are here, the margin between batting first and bowling first doesn't matter much. We're good to bat first," Pant said.
Pant also confirmed that Lucknow Super Giants will continue with the same lineup from their previous match, maintaining stability as they look to extend their winning momentum.

LSG vs GT Toss Decision Reflects Ekana's Chasing Bias
Gill's decision to bowl first aligns with historical trends at the Ekana Stadium, where chasing teams have enjoyed a noticeable edge.
Out of 23 IPL matches played at the venue, teams batting second have won 13 times, compared to nine wins for teams batting first, reinforcing the preference to chase.
The toss has also played a meaningful role in shaping results. Teams winning the toss have historically converted that advantage into victories more often than not, making Gill's call an important early move in the contest.
Last season's results further strengthened the chasing pattern, with captains increasingly choosing to bowl first after assessing the surface conditions.
Conditions Could Influence Late-Game Strategy
The Ekana pitch is traditionally slower than many other IPL venues, often offering assistance to bowlers who rely on variations and discipline.
While batting becomes easier once players settle in, scoring freely in the early overs can be challenging. As the match progresses, dew and pitch wear can influence how the surface behaves, making chasing a preferred option in afternoon games.
Sunday's hot conditions in Lucknow are also expected to impact the surface, potentially causing it to dry and break up slightly as the match progresses. That factor makes Gujarat's decision to bowl first a calculated tactical move rather than a routine one.
What the Toss Means for LSG vs GT Match Strategy
The toss outcome could shape how both teams approach their innings, especially during the powerplay and middle overs.
For Lucknow Super Giants, batting first will require a steady start, as early wickets on this surface can put pressure on the middle order. Their approach will likely revolve around building partnerships and setting a competitive total rather than chasing quick runs early.
Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, will focus on restricting scoring during the middle overs and keeping the target within reach. With a chasing strategy in mind, pacing the innings during the second half will be central to their plans.
Historical Trends Add Intrigue to the Contest
Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans have produced closely contested matches in recent seasons, with Gujarat holding a slight advantage in the overall head-to-head record.
However, Lucknow have enjoyed success against Gujarat in recent meetings, adding another layer of competitiveness to Sunday's encounter.
With both teams entering the match with momentum-Lucknow on a winning run and Gujarat coming off a confidence-boosting victory-the toss decision could play a defining role in determining how the contest unfolds.
