Speaking to CNN Esportes on September 13, Ancelotti made clear this isn't a case of a coach moving on from a player - it's a player who has already moved on from the team. "Ney deserved to be at the World Cup for his qualities, but he has already confirmed that he does not want to return to the national team. He cannot be replaced; he was an extraordinary and unique talent," Ancelotti said.
That's a notable framing. Ancelotti isn't suggesting Neymar's level had dropped or that he'd been dropped for form. He's stating, plainly, that the decision to step away was Neymar's, and that Brazil's coaching staff is simply acknowledging it as final.
