India-Pakistan cricket and hockey matches at the 2026 Asian Games were the most-viewed games in the history of the continental multi-sport event, according
to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
The two high-profile clashes took place within 24 hours of each other in Aichi-Nagoya, with India beating Pakistan 4-3 in a dramatic men's hockey semifinal before defeating their arch-rivals by 19 runs in the men's cricket final.
The OCA cited 212 records from the Aichi-Nagoya Games as evidence of the scale of the event, while highlighting the India-Pakistan encounters as the most-watched matches in Asian Games history.
India-Pakistan hockey semifinal goes down to the final minute
The men's hockey semifinal between India and Pakistan at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium produced one of the most dramatic matches of the Games.
India established a 3-0 lead through two goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh and another from Sukhjeet Singh. Pakistan, however, fought back through Abu Mahmood, Hannan Shahid and Waheed Rana to level the contest at 3-3.
With a shootout looming, Abhishek produced the decisive moment in the final minute, with his effort taking a deflection off Sufyan Khan and wrong-footing the Pakistan goalkeeper.
India held on for a 4-3 victory and advanced to the gold-medal match.
The result was particularly significant because India were the defending Asian Games champions and needed a victory to keep their bid for a direct LA 2028 Olympic qualification spot alive.
India beat Pakistan again in cricket final
The rivalry continued in the men's cricket final, where India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs to win the Asian Games gold medal.
India posted 211/6 after being sent in to bat, with Abhishek Sharma making 61 and Tilak Varma remaining unbeaten on 51.
Pakistan mounted a strong chase but finished on 192/6. Hasan Nawaz led the response with a brilliant 96 off 51 balls, including seven sixes and five fours, but Pakistan ultimately fell short.
India's victory secured the men's cricket gold and completed a memorable Asian Games campaign for the Indian team.
Abhishek Sharma sets the tone before Pakistan fight back
India's innings began aggressively, with 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hitting back-to-back sixes in the second over before falling for 15.
Abhishek Sharma then took control, reaching his half-century from just 20 balls. He was given two reprieves by Pakistan before eventually departing for 61.
India briefly lost momentum after Abhishek, Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer fell, leaving the side at 133/5 in the 15th over.
Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube changed the complexion of the innings in the closing overs. The pair added 62 runs in five overs, with Tilak hitting four sixes and Dube clearing the boundary twice, helping India finish on 211/6.
Hasan Nawaz's 96 keeps Pakistan in the contest
Pakistan's chase appeared to be slipping away before Hasan Nawaz produced a counter-attacking innings.
He reached his half-century from 28 balls and formed an important partnership with Saim Ayub. Their stand of 87 brought Pakistan back into contention before Dube dismissed Ayub.
Pakistan were 126/4 at the beginning of the 15th over and still required 52 runs from the final three overs.
India then tightened their defence. Washington Sundar removed Abdul Samad, while Jasprit Bumrah conceded only 11 runs in the penultimate over.
Pakistan needed 33 from the final over, and although Hasan remained at the crease until the last delivery, he was dismissed attempting a final big shot.
His 96 was not enough to prevent India from completing a 19-run victory.
Why were the India-Pakistan games so significant?
India and Pakistan only meet in international tournaments and on neutral ground because of the political tensions between the two countries, giving their sporting encounters an added significance.
At Aichi-Nagoya, the rivalry was played out in two major team sports in quick succession.
The hockey semifinal had a place in the tournament's gold-medal and Olympic-qualification race, while the cricket final put the two sides directly against each other with an Asian Games gold medal at stake.
The matches also attracted significant attention from audiences in India and Pakistan, as well as from the wider Asian sporting audience.
India completed a memorable Asian Games campaign
India ultimately won both hockey and cricket gold medals at Aichi-Nagoya.
The men's hockey team recovered from the late scare against Pakistan to beat Malaysia 5-1 in the final, successfully defending its Asian Games title.
The men's cricket team also finished on top of the podium after beating Pakistan, while India's women's cricket team had earlier retained its Asian Games title.
The OCA's recognition of the India-Pakistan clashes as the most-viewed matches in Asian Games history therefore added another significant milestone to India's campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.
