Cricket fans are in for a thrilling spectacle as the Hong Kong Sixes 2025 gets underway on November 7, featuring 12 teams battling it out in one of the sport's
most entertaining and fast-paced tournaments.
Organised by Cricket Hong Kong, China, this iconic six-a-side event is officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and has gained cult status among fans for its electrifying format.
Designed for television and casual viewers alike, the Hong Kong Sixes guarantees high-scoring encounters, lightning-quick matches, and moments of sheer unpredictability - all packed within 45-minute contests.
Traditionally staged at the Kowloon Cricket Club, the competition has occasionally ventured to other venues, including the Hong Kong Stadium in 1996 and 1997, and the Mission Road Ground in Kowloon for the 2024 edition. The 2025 tournament continues to promise the same dose of excitement and innovation that has defined it for decades.
Each team fields six players instead of the usual eleven, with every innings limited to six overs. Every bowler, apart from the wicketkeeper, must deliver exactly one over, while wides and no-balls attract a two-run penalty with no free hits. Adding to the intensity, once a batsman reaches 31 runs, they must retire "not out" but can return once the rest of the lineup has either been dismissed or retired.
If a side loses five wickets before completing its overs, the final batsman continues with the fifth dismissed player serving as a runner, ensuring the innings only ends when the last batter is dismissed. The result is continuous action where every delivery counts.
The tournament format is just as unique. Teams are divided into four groups:
Pool A: South Africa, Afghanistan, Nepal
Pool B: Australia, England, UAE
Pool C: India, Pakistan, Kuwait
Pool D: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Hong Kong (China)
Each side faces its group opponents once, with the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals, while third-placed teams compete in the Bowl competition. Losing quarter-finalists move to the Plate semi-finals, leading up to three separate finals - Main Final, Plate Final, and Bowl Final - ensuring there's always something at stake.
