India produced a stunning batting display to chase down a mammoth 406-run target against the West Indies in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium
on Wednesday, winning by eight wickets with 39 balls to spare.
Captain Shubman Gill led the record-breaking chase with an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also made significant contributions as India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs.
The chase was set up by a blazing opening partnership between Gill and Rohit. Rohit smashed 101 off 75 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes, while Gill continued to build his innings at an extraordinary rate.
Gill brought up his century from just 62 balls, the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain, before accelerating further to reach a historic double century. The India skipper eventually completed his second ODI double century, reaching 200 in just 117 balls. That made it the fastest double century in men's ODI history, surpassing Ishan Kishan's previous mark of 126 balls. Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 deliveries, with 26 fours and eight sixes, maintaining a strike rate of 167.67.
Virat Kohli, who had scored an unbeaten 139 in the first ODI, contributed 29 off 19 balls before being dismissed by Shamar Joseph. Ruturaj Gaikwad then joined Gill and remained unbeaten on 31 off 37 balls as India completed the chase.
The victory was made even more remarkable by the West Indies' batting effort earlier in the day. The visitors posted 405/7, with John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114) all scoring centuries. It was the first time West Indies had three centurions in the same ODI innings.
India's successful pursuit of 406 also eclipsed their previous highest successful ODI chase of 360 against Australia in 2013. With the victory, India have taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, with the third and final match scheduled for October 3 in New Chandigarh.
India Complete Second-Highest Successful ODI Run Chase
Shubman Gill's record-breaking double century powered India to 406/2 in just 43.3 overs, giving them an eight-wicket victory with 39 balls to spare. The chase is now India's highest successful run chase in men's ODI cricket, surpassing their previous best of 362/1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.
It is also the second-highest target successfully chased in ODI cricket. Only South Africa's famous pursuit of 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 stands above India's latest achievement.
