Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals head into one of the biggest matches of IPL 2026 with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 17 in what is effectively a must-win game - especially for Delhi Capitals, who are running out of opportunities to stay alive in the playoff race.

Delhi Capitals are in the toughest position among all teams still mathematically alive in the playoff race.
Their equation is brutally simple: lose against Rajasthan Royals and they are virtually eliminated, win and they remain alive heading into the final league game against KKR.
Even if DC win both remaining matches, they can only reach 14 points, which means qualification would still depend heavily on:
- other results,
- margins of victories,
- and especially net run rate.
That is where Delhi's biggest problem lies.
Their NRR of -0.993 is by far the worst among the playoff contenders, meaning narrow wins may not be enough.
Delhi ideally need two convincing victories, RR to lose momentum, and multiple teams around them to drop points.

KL Rahul's form also keeps them alive. The wicketkeeper-batter has been one of the few consistent positives in DC's season and remains their biggest batting threat heading into this clash.

Rajasthan Royals remain very much alive in the playoff race despite their recent dip in form.
After starting the season with four straight wins, RR have slowed down significantly, managing just two victories in their next seven games.
Still, the equation remains favourable compared to Delhi.
If RR win all three remaining matches, they finish on 18 points, which should almost certainly secure qualification.
Even two wins from their last three games could keep them strongly in contention depending on results elsewhere.
That makes this Delhi clash enormously important.
A victory over DC would:
- almost eliminate one direct rival,
- keep RR firmly in the top-four race,
- and ease pressure heading into matches against already-eliminated LSG and struggling MI.
Riyan Parag's side also possesses one of the most explosive batting lineups in the competition, led by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

This game carries massive playoff implications for both sides.
For Delhi Capitals: It is essentially knockout cricket already, and anything less than a win could end their season.
For Rajasthan Royals: a win could push them closer to the playoffs, while a loss would drag them back into the chaos of the mid-table race.
