Jasprit Bumrah's difficult IPL 2026 campaign continued to raise concerns after another expensive outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad, with the Mumbai Indians
spearhead registering figures of 0 for 54 - one of the costliest spells of his T20 career.
For a bowler widely regarded as one of the most reliable death specialists in world cricket, Bumrah's recent numbers have been unusually modest. Across eight matches this season, he has managed only two wickets while conceding runs at a rate rarely associated with his name.
The latest spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad only deepened those concerns. With Mumbai Indians defending a total of 243 at the Wankhede Stadium, Bumrah was expected to play a decisive role. Instead, he struggled to impose control, particularly during the middle and death overs, as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the target with relative ease.
The conditions at the Wankhede did not favour Bumrah's preferred approach. With heavy dew settling in during the second innings, his reliance on slower deliveries became risky. Several of those variations lacked grip and sat up nicely for the batters, allowing them to attack with confidence.
Equally noticeable was the absence of Bumrah's trademark yorkers - deliveries that have defined his reputation as one of the best finishers in T20 cricket. On multiple occasions, he attempted to vary his pace, but his execution lacked the usual sharpness that has made him such a difficult bowler to face.
The numbers underline the extent of the struggle. The 0 for 54 against Sunrisers Hyderabad now ranks among Bumrah's most expensive spells in T20 cricket, adding to a short list of rare occasions where he has conceded heavily without picking up wickets.
However, Bumrah's dip in form cannot be viewed in isolation. Mumbai Indians' entire pace unit has struggled to contain opposition batters this season. Senior bowlers including Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar have all leaked runs at high economy rates, placing additional pressure on Bumrah to deliver breakthroughs.
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene defended his lead pacer after the match, stating, "Bumrah is bowling well, it is just where we are not putting pressure in the powerplay. "
There may be multiple factors behind the recent dip. Bumrah featured heavily during India's victorious T20 World Cup campaign just weeks ago, and workload or fatigue could be playing a role. Minor technical adjustments, rhythm issues, or even tactical miscalculations in changing conditions could also be contributing to the struggles.
Despite the current slump, Bumrah's pedigree remains unquestioned. But with Mumbai Indians already battling inconsistency this season, his return to form could prove crucial to any hopes of turning their campaign around.
For now, though, the latest outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad stands as another reminder that even the best can endure rare, difficult phases - and Bumrah is currently navigating one of them.
