In a move that's sending shockwaves through the IPL universe, Suryakumar Yadav - the flamboyant 360-degree batter once hailed as the heartbeat of Mumbai
Indians, has seemingly turned his back on the franchise that made him a superstar.
On June 8, 2026, fans noticed a dramatic Instagram purge: Surya removed "Mumbai Indians" and "Mumbai" from his bio, unfollowed the official MI account, deleted nearly all MI-related posts and collaboration content of over 100+ photos and videos, and even updated his profile picture.
This comes days after he was stripped of India's T20I captaincy and dropped from the national side altogether. Surya had led India to T20 World Cup glory earlier in 2026, but a prolonged lean patch proved costly.
Is This the End of an Era for SKY at MI?
Suryakumar joined MI as a relatively unheralded talent and evolved into a global T20 phenom under their wing, amassing over 4,000 runs for the franchise and playing starring roles in their title wins. He was retained ahead of IPL 2026 at a hefty ₹16.35 crore.
And in recent times, the former India T20 captain has been on the right side of the Paltans as well. He also captained MI for a couple of matches this season in the absence of Hardik Pandya.
But whispers of unrest have grown louder. Similar social media "cleanses" have preceded big moves in the past. With IPL 2027 mega auction/retention rules looming and MI likely eyeing a major reset, could Surya be eyeing a fresh start elsewhere?
Neither Suryakumar nor Mumbai Indians have issued an official statement yet. Is this a deliberate signal of discontent amid form woes and team turmoil? A temporary "digital detox"? Or the end of SKY at MI?
Hardik Pandya set to leave MI
Surya has joined the queue with Hardik Pandya, who is set to leave the Paltans as well. Hardik joined MI in 2024 and captained the Paltans for the last three seasons without any significant success. The all-rounder is reportedly mentally exhausted and has confirmed his wish to depart the franchise.
