Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli created history on Sunday by becoming the youngest-ever Formula One world champion at the age of 20 after securing the title
with a third-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Although Antonelli missed out on the race victory, his podium finish proved sufficient to put the championship beyond the reach of his rivals. The Italian now holds an unassailable 119-point lead in the drivers' standings, remarkably sealing his maiden world title.
The 20-year-old could barely contain his emotions as he crossed the finish line, breaking down in tears of joy over the team radio. His achievement marks a historic moment for Italian motorsport, as he becomes the first driver from the country to win the Formula One World Championship since 1953.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed victory in a fiercely contested race at the high-altitude Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton finished second after starting from pole position.
The Mexico City Grand Prix was filled with drama, featuring multiple crashes and two safety car periods. The race was also interrupted by a lengthy red-flag stoppage, with officials suspending proceedings for 33 minutes when 25 of the scheduled 71 laps remained.
Despite the interruptions and intense competition, Antonelli kept his composure to bring his Mercedes home in third and deliver a memorable championship-winning performance.
His title triumph also represents a major milestone in his rapidly developing Formula One career. At just 20, Antonelli has established himself among the sport's elite and ended Italy's long wait for another world champion.
While Verstappen celebrated his Mexico City victory, the spotlight firmly belonged to Antonelli, whose consistency throughout the season helped him reach one of Formula One's most remarkable milestones.
