Chennai Super Kings youngster Ayush Mhatre has etched his name in the Chepauk record books with a stuning knock against Punjab Kings on Friday (April 3).
PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first under lights, setting the stage for CSK's top order to fire on a typical Chepauk surface that offered early grip but rewarded clean striking.
Sanju Samson, slotted at the top alongside skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, fell early, leaving CSK at a precarious stage. Enter 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre at No. 3. What followed was a masterclass in composure under pressure.
Mhatre took control immediately, unleashing an array of drives, pulls, and lofted sixes. Forty of his runs came from boundaries as he raced to a blistering fifty, powering CSK to 94/1 in just nine overs. By the 10-over mark, he is batting unbeaten on 62 off 35 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes), with Gaikwad providing steady support. His fearless approach after Samson's dismissal has turned the momentum decisively in CSK's favour.
Ayush Mhatre creates New Record
At 18 years and 261 days, Mhatre became the youngest player to score an IPL fifty at Chepauk, adding another chapter to his meteoric rise. This was his second 50-plus score in the IPL before turning 19, placing him level with Prithvi Shaw's tally of two.
Only Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, with three such knocks before 19, stands ahead in the all-time list. The Mumbai prodigy, who captained India to U-19 World Cup glory and made an instant impact in IPL 2025 with 240 runs at a strike rate of nearly 189, continues to prove he belongs among the elite.
