The IPL trade market is often where franchises quietly begin correcting the mistakes exposed during the season. IPL 2026 has left several teams facing
structural questions, tactical imbalances, and leadership uncertainty - setting the stage for a potentially explosive 2027 trade window.
Among the names likely to dominate conversations are Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, Rishabh Pant, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel - players whose individual quality remains unquestioned, but whose current team environments may no longer suit either side strategically.
Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians may be heading toward a reset
Mumbai Indians' disappointing campaign exposed just how fragile the squad became beneath its star-heavy core.
Hardik Pandya struggled to consistently influence games either with bat or ball, while the constant reshuffling of his batting role reflected the larger tactical confusion surrounding MI's middle order.
The bigger issue, however, was structural. Mumbai lacked balance between finishers, anchors, and bowling support around Jasprit Bumrah. Leadership scrutiny only intensified the pressure as MI slipped toward the bottom of the table.
A franchise reset now appears increasingly likely.
If Mumbai fully transitions toward a cleaner leadership structure centred around Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, Hardik could suddenly become the biggest Indian trade asset available.
For Kolkata Knight Riders, Hardik would solve their long-standing search for a genuine Indian pace-bowling all-rounder who can finish innings and lead under pressure. Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, desperately need an established Indian captain capable of rebuilding their fractured core.
Trent Boult's decline leaves Mumbai with difficult questions
Trent Boult's role at Mumbai Indians was designed around one specific job - dominating the PowerPlay.
But IPL 2026 saw the veteran left-armer lose much of his trademark new-ball threat. His wicket tally dipped sharply while his economy climbed, leaving MI exposed during the opening overs far too often.
At a massive overseas salary slot, Mumbai may now prefer reinvesting in younger seam options instead of retaining a specialist whose role has become increasingly narrow.
Yet Boult still remains one of the best swing bowlers in world cricket under favourable conditions.
Gujarat Titans could view him as the perfect left-arm complement to Kagiso Rabada, creating one of the most dangerous new-ball pairings in the tournament. Sunrisers Hyderabad's ultra-aggressive setup could also benefit from Boult's ability to deliver immediate breakthroughs upfront.
Rishabh Pant's LSG experiment has failed to click
Few moves in IPL history carried as much pressure as Lucknow Super Giants' record-breaking investment in Rishabh Pant.
But the season never truly settled for either player or franchise.
Pant struggled for role clarity throughout IPL 2026, shifting between opening and No. 3 while never consistently dictating games at his usual attacking tempo. For a side already suffering from conservative batting patterns, the lack of a fearless middle-order aggressor became fatal.
The problem is not Pant's quality - it is the tactical environment around him.
Lucknow's current setup simply does not maximise his strengths.
A move away now feels increasingly realistic, especially given the enormous salary commitment tied to him.
Chennai Super Kings stand out as a natural fit. As the franchise slowly prepares for life after MS Dhoni, Pant could become both a long-term wicketkeeping successor and the next marquee Indian face of the franchise.
A return to Delhi Capitals would also make enormous tactical sense. DC badly lack a stable Indian middle-order leader, and Pant's aggressive style perfectly matches the identity the franchise originally built around him.
Ravi Bishnoi still fits modern T20 cricket - just not Rajasthan's structure
Ravi Bishnoi's season numbers appear decent on paper, but Rajasthan Royals never quite found the right balance around him.
RR's attack leaned heavily toward aggressive pace bowling, often leaving Bishnoi exposed on flatter surfaces where his attacking style became expensive. His wicket-taking ability remained valuable, but the franchise increasingly struggled to control middle overs collectively.
That makes Bishnoi a fascinating trade candidate.
Mumbai Indians remain desperate for a genuine Indian wicket-taking spinner to complement Bumrah and their pace-heavy attack. Bishnoi's attacking style would immediately fill one of MI's biggest tactical weaknesses.
Sunrisers Hyderabad could also become an ideal fit. SRH's aggressive batting philosophy naturally allows their bowlers greater freedom to attack rather than simply defend totals. Bishnoi's high-risk, wicket-taking approach could thrive in that environment.
Axar Patel's leadership stint may not survive Delhi's overhaul
Axar Patel remains one of the smartest utility cricketers in the IPL, but Delhi Capitals' disastrous season may force a separation between his individual value and his leadership role.
As captain, DC often looked reactive rather than proactive. Axar's own batting impact dipped sharply, leaving Delhi without reliable finishing depth in pressure situations.
With ownership changes and major restructuring expected, Delhi may decide to fully reboot their leadership group.
That would immediately attract interest around the league.
Mumbai Indians could use Axar as the experienced Indian spin-bowling stabiliser their current attack badly lacks. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, could build a devastating spin ecosystem around him on slower surfaces while simultaneously strengthening their lower-middle-order flexibility.
IPL 2027 could become the biggest trade window in years
Unlike previous seasons where franchises mostly protected continuity, IPL 2026 exposed deep structural flaws across several teams simultaneously.
Mumbai Indians need balance. Lucknow Super Giants need identity. Delhi Capitals need stability.
That combination could trigger one of the most aggressive trade windows in IPL history - and players like Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, Rishabh Pant, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel may sit right at the centre of it.
