Yashasvi Jaiswal's latest Test failure has brought his recent struggles into sharper focus, with his numbers pointing to a specific weakness in his batting
rather than simply a broader dip in form.
The India opener was dismissed for a three-ball duck after edging a delivery outside off stump while attempting an aggressive shot. It was Jaiswal's seventh duck in Test cricket and extended a run of inconsistent returns over his last 10 innings.

Jaiswal has scored 358 runs across his last 10 Test innings at an average of 35.80.
His scores during that period are:
0, 32, 24, 13, 58, 0, 12, 8, 175 and 36.
The 175 is the clear outlier in an otherwise modest sequence. Jaiswal has crossed 50 only twice in those 10 innings, while also recording two ducks.
The latest failure also took his tally of Test ducks to seven.
Despite that, his overall Test record remains strong. Jaiswal has scored seven centuries and 13 fifties in 29 Tests, averaging 48.75.
That contrast is central to his current situation: the issue is not a lack of proven ability, but the frequency with which his aggressive approach is producing inexpensive dismissals.
The cut shot has become a statistical weakness
The most striking numbers concern Jaiswal's cut shot against pace.
From his Test debut through the 2025 England tour, Jaiswal scored 293 runs from 170 balls when attempting the cut against pacers. He was dismissed four times in those situations, giving him an average of 73.25, with a false-shot rate of 31.1%.
Since the 2025 home season, those numbers have changed dramatically.
Jaiswal has managed just 47 runs from 27 balls while attempting the cut against pace, again suffering four dismissals. His average in those situations has fallen to 11.75, while his false-shot rate has risen to 48.1%.
That represents a significant deterioration in one of the shots that was previously among his most productive attacking options.
The increase in false shots is particularly relevant because Jaiswal's batting is built around pressure and aggression.
Earlier in his Test career, he was able to use the cut to score heavily without regularly exposing himself to dismissal. Since the 2025 home season, however, almost half of his attempts in the cited sample have reportedly resulted in false shots.
His latest dismissal followed the same pattern.
Rather than leaving the delivery outside off stump, Jaiswal attempted to attack it and edged through to the fielding side. The dismissal meant another early exit and another innings in which India's opener failed to establish himself at the top of the order.

Jaiswal's attacking game remains one of his biggest strengths. His seven Test hundreds and average of 48.75 underline the value he brings when he gets through the early phase of an innings.
The numbers instead suggest that he needs greater selectivity against pace, particularly when attempting the cut outside off stump.
The difference between his earlier numbers and his output since the 2025 home season is stark. A shot that once produced runs at an average of 73.25 in the cited sample is now returning just 11.75.
For Jaiswal, the next step is therefore less about abandoning his attacking style and more about identifying when the risk is worth taking.
His latest duck is only one innings, but the numbers around it suggest a technical pattern that India will want their opener to address.
