Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has backed Rohit Sharma to make a strong impact in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026, describing the veteran
opener as "much fitter and very committed" ahead of the new season.
Rohit, who has not featured in T20 internationals since guiding India to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2024, is set to return to franchise action with renewed focus and preparation.
"A Newer Version of Rohit"
Jayawardene revealed that Rohit has put in significant work behind the scenes, particularly in the lead-up to Mumbai Indians' training camp.
"He has done a lot of work behind the scenes. He looked very good in the nets. This is a newer version of Rohit - much fitter and very committed," Jayawardene said.
The MI coach expressed confidence that Rohit will lead from the front, both in terms of performance and influence within the squad.
Key Figure Despite T20I Retirement
Even after stepping away from T20 internationals, Rohit continues to remain a crucial pillar for Mumbai Indians. In IPL 2025, the opener scored 418 runs in 15 matches, underlining his continued value in the shortest format at the franchise level.
With added fitness and preparation, MI will hope Rohit can elevate his game further in IPL 2026.
Jayawardene Backs Suryakumar Yadav to Bounce Back
Jayawardene also addressed concerns around Suryakumar Yadav, who had a relatively modest outing in the T20 World Cup despite India's triumph.
The stylish batter scored 242 runs in the tournament, but the MI coach remains unfazed.
"SKY is not worried too much about his form. He's a class operator. He will always get there," Jayawardene said.
He also praised Suryakumar's leadership, highlighting his ability to make tough decisions during high-pressure situations.
Focus on Youth Development
Apart from the senior stars, Jayawardene reiterated Mumbai Indians' commitment to nurturing young talent. Speaking after the MI Junior final, he emphasised the franchise's scouting system.
"This is something we thrive on - identifying young boys and girls. This year too, we have spotted some really good talent. "
MI Eye Strong Campaign in IPL 2026
With experienced leaders like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, along with a focus on youth development, Mumbai Indians appear well-positioned for a strong campaign.
A fitter Rohit at the top could prove to be a major boost as MI aim to reclaim their dominance in IPL 2026.
