The drama peaked in the 93rd minute when Mostafa Shobeir sliced a clearance and Khalilzadeh forced the rebound over the line. Iran supporters celebrated wildly, sensing both victory and second place, but VAR showed part of Khalilzadeh’s boot was marginally ahead of the last defender during the phase.
That decision means Egypt now face Australia in Dallas in the round of 32, having surrendered top spot in Group G to Belgium, who defeated New Zealand 5-1. Iran, despite remaining unbeaten across three matches, must rely on other results to confirm qualification as one of the best third‑placed teams.
Iran’s performance statistics underline how close the team came to progressing on the night. The side recorded an expected goals figure of 1.94, the highest xG total in Iran’s World Cup history, surpassing the 1.88 registered against the United States in 1998. Saeid Ezatolahi even headed against the crossbar deep into added time.
The contest had already delivered plenty before the late controversy. Egypt struck first after only five minutes when Mahmoud Saber’s low effort slipped under Alireza Beiranvand. Iran responded quickly, equalising in the 14th minute as Ramin Rezaeian drilled in from a narrow angle after Shobeir parried Milad Mohammadi’s initial shot.
