Just when Neeraj Chopra appeared to be finding his rhythm, his 2026 season has come to an abrupt and painful end.
India's javelin superstar has confirmed
that he will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a ligament tear in his ankle during a training session.
The injury rules him out of two major upcoming targets, the Diamond League Final and the Asian Games, bringing an untimely conclusion to a campaign that had begun to gather momentum.
Chopra confirmed the setback on Saturday through a statement on Instagram, revealing that the decision to end his season was taken after consultations with his doctor and team.
"After a period of hard work, I finally felt I was gaining the momentum I had been looking for with a Season's Best throw in Lausanne. Unfortunately, shortly after, I sustained a ligament tear in my ankle during training. After discussions with my doctor and team, we've decided that I will sit out the rest of this season. "
The Olympic champion admitted that the timing of the injury was particularly disappointing, especially after he had started to rediscover his form.
"It's disappointing, especially because I felt close to finding my rhythm. But as they say, setbacks are a part of the journey. My focus now is on recovering well and coming back even stronger. "
Chopra's 2026 campaign had been far from straightforward. After an injury-disrupted start, the 28-year-old returned to competitive action at the Doha Diamond League in June. He opened his season with an 85.69m throw, finishing fourth.
He then showed further progress at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he produced an 85.83m effort to claim the silver medal. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage took gold with 89.75m.
The biggest indication that Chopra was beginning to regain his best was his performance at the Lausanne Diamond League. Chopra launched the javelin 88.05m, his season-best effort to finish second behind Pathirage, who won the competition with 88.19m.
The performance also strengthened Chopra's position in the Diamond League standings.
Despite competing at only two Diamond League meetings, he collected 12 qualification points and secured his place in the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels.
But the opportunity to compete for another prestigious title has now disappeared. Before the injury, Chopra had been looking ahead to a crucial final stretch of the season.
