Abhishek Sharma continues to take the cricketing world by storm, and on Saturday, December 6, the young left-hander added another extraordinary milestone
to his growing resume.
During Punjab's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Elite Group C clash against Services in Hyderabad, the 23-year-old became the first Indian player in history to smash 100 sixes in a single calendar year in T20 cricket.
Abhishek reached the landmark when he struck his second six of the match - a moment that secured his place in the record books. He went on to score a fluent 62 off 34 deliveries, featuring eight boundaries and three sixes, continuing his remarkable consistency across formats and competitions.
His six-hitting spree has been spread across multiple tournaments this year. For India, Abhishek has cleared the ropes 47 times in 17 T20I appearances. In the IPL 2025 season, representing Sunrisers Hyderabad, he added another 28 sixes in 14 matches. Meanwhile, in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he has already smashed 26 sixes in just six games. In total, Abhishek now sits on 101 sixes from 37 T20 matches in 2025.
Before this achievement, the Indian record for most T20 sixes in a calendar year also belonged to Abhishek - 87 maximums in 2024. Prior to his rise, Suryakumar Yadav held the national best with 85 sixes in 2022.
Globally, the all-time record still belongs to Nicholas Pooran, who lit up the cricketing calendar in 2024 with 170 sixes across 76 matches, playing for multiple leagues and the West Indies.
T20 legend Chris Gayle was the first cricketer to breach the 100-six barrier, doing so in 2011. Gayle went on to replicate the feat across six separate years during his 17-year T20 career - a record unmatched until the new generation began closing in.
In the ongoing year, Austria's Karanbir Singh leads globally with 122 sixes in 32 outings, but Abhishek has the opportunity to climb further with India's upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa.
If he manages at least three more sixes, Abhishek will become only the second player from a Test nation to hit 50 T20I sixes in a calendar year - another milestone that now looks well within reach.
