New Delhi, Nov 3: Suryakumar Yadav could be in line for a new challenge in the IPL, with Lucknow Super Giants reportedly interested in bringing the Mumbai
Indians star on board for the 2027 IPL season.
According to a SportsTak report, LSG are considering for a leadership role after parting ways with Rishabh Pant following IPL 2026. The development comes amid growing speculation over the future of Mumbai Indians captain , who has also been linked with a potential move away from the franchise.
Lucknow Super Giants have struggled to establish themselves as consistent contenders since entering the IPL in 2022. Their decision to invest heavily in Pant ahead of the 2025 season did not deliver the desired results, and the franchise are now understood to be exploring alternative leadership options as they plan for 2027.
The Mumbaikar's experience and standing in Indian cricket make him an appealing candidate. The right-handed batter has also led India in T20 internationals, giving him valuable experience of managing a team in the shortest format.
Suryakumar Yadav Deserves An IPL Captaincy Opportunity
Despite being one of India's most influential T20 batters, the 36-year-old has yet to lead an IPL franchise as a full time captain. For the next season, the five-time champions - under newly appointed head coach Kieron Pollard - are reportedly looking to re-appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain of the franchise for the 2027 season.
SKY has been part of the IPL setup since 2014 and has established himself as one of the format's most accomplished batters. His leadership experience with India has further strengthened his credentials for a potential captaincy role at franchise level.
Suryakumar also holds a significant place in Indian cricket history. He became the third Indian captain, after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, to lead the Men in Blue to a T20 World Cup title.
However, the right-hander was removed from India's T20I side after guiding the team to the T20 World Cup triumph in March 2026. A potential move to Lucknow could offer him an opportunity to take on a new challenge: leading an IPL franchise and helping build a team capable of competing consistently for the title.
Mumbai Indians Reluctant To Lose Both Hardik And Suryakumar?
Suryakumar's reported willingness to consider the opportunity could make the situation interesting for Mumbai Indians. However, the franchise are understood to be reluctant to let both him and Hardik Pandya leave in the same transfer window.
The current understanding is that Mumbai would consider trading Suryakumar to Lucknow only if Hardik remains at the franchise. MI are reportedly not keen on losing two of their major players as they look to reshape their squad ahead of IPL 2027.
The potential movement of either player would be significant for Mumbai Indians, given their importance to the team's batting and leadership structure.
IPL 2028 Mega Auction Could Influence Trade Decisions
The prospect of the IPL 2028 mega auction could also influence franchise decisions ahead of the 2027 season.
With teams expected to assess their long-term squad plans and auction purses, the coming transfer window could see several high-profile players discussed in trade negotiations. Franchises may look to strengthen specific areas of their squads while positioning themselves for the next mega auction.
Suryakumar's potential move to LSG could therefore become one of the major talking points ahead of IPL 2027, especially with Hardik Pandya's future also attracting attention.
