The final was held at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on June 29, 2024. India won the toss and chose to bat first. The innings started with setbacks as South Africa took early wickets, including dismissing captain Rohit Sharma for just 9 runs. However, the experience and resilience of Virat Kohli, who scored a crucial 76 off 59 balls, and Axar Patel's all-round performance (47 runs and key bowling contributions) helped India post a strong total of 176 for 7- the highest first-innings total in a T20 World Cup final.
South Africa's chase was tense and came down to the last over. The Proteas had a solid partnership led by Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen but faltered in the latter stages due to India's disciplined bowling by Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya (who claimed 3 wickets), and Arshdeep Singh. Ultimately, South Africa fell short by 7 runs at 169 for 8. Hardik Pandya's crucial wickets and Suryakumar Yadav's stunning boundary catch near the end tilted the match in India's favor.
This victory was historic as it was India's first ICC cricket title since the 2013 Champions Trophy, their first World Cup win since 2011, and their second T20 World Cup title, the first being in 2007. India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup undefeated throughout the tournament, winning 8 matches in a row.
The moment was emotional for Rohit Sharma, who reflected on how the pitch in Barbados would "forever be in his veins. " After the final, Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements from the T20I format, marking the end of an era.
