The Indian cricket team is gearing up for an important two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting August 15 in Galle. However, for captain Shubman
Gill and his squad, this tour is not just about winning another bilateral series. It is a high-stakes contest to keep their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final hopes alive.
Currently sitting in the fifth position on the WTC points table, India has very little room for error. Following a difficult 0-2 home defeat to South Africa earlier in this cycle, the team's Points Percentage (PCT) stands at 48.15, having recorded four wins, four losses, and a draw in nine matches.
The WTC standings are ranked by points percentage rather than total points, making every single match significant regardless of how many games a team has played. Sri Lanka sits right behind India in sixth place with a PCT of 41.67. As the series approaches, here is a detailed look at how the upcoming results can alter the points table and impact India's journey to the WTC final.
Scenario 1: A 2-0 Series Sweep for India
If India manages to register a clean sweep in Sri Lanka, it will provide a much-needed boost to their campaign. A 2-0 victory would add 24 points to their tally, taking their overall PCT up to 57.58.
While a clean sweep is the ideal result, it will not immediately propel India into the top three. The current standings are heavily dominated by Australia (87.50%), South Africa (75.00%), and New Zealand (72.22%), with Bangladesh occupying the fourth spot (58.33%). However, a sweep would reduce the gap and place India in a commanding position ahead of their demanding home and away schedule. For Sri Lanka, two consecutive home losses would drop their PCT to 27.78.
Scenario 2: India Wins the Series 1-0
If India secures one victory and the other match ends in a draw, they will collect 16 points from the series. This outcome would raise their points percentage to 51.51. While it ensures they win the bilateral series, the marginal jump on the points table would keep them heavily dependent on the outcomes of series played by other contending teams. In this scenario, Sri Lanka's PCT would drop to 33.33.
Scenario 3: A 0-2 Series Defeat for India
A series loss in Sri Lanka would be a massive blow to India's WTC final ambitions. Should they suffer a 0-2 whitewash, India's PCT would drop to a concerning 39.39.
Conversely, a clean sweep over India would be a massive turning point for the hosts. Sri Lanka's PCT would climb to 61.11, allowing them to leapfrog India and seriously challenge the top teams on the points table.
Scenario 4: A 0-0 draw
In that case, India will only manage around 8 points out of the two matches. It would also hamper India's WTC final hopes significantly, taking down their PCT to 45.45. If that happens, Shubman Gill and his team's chances to reach another summit clash would become negligible.
