Dhaka, April 7: In a major administrative shake-up, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has undergone a leadership overhaul with former captain Aminul Islam Bulbul being removed as president by the National Sports Council (NSC). Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed the chief of the ad-hoc BCB panel.
The decision comes just days after the BCB had reached out to the BCCI to revive bilateral cricketing ties, adding further intrigue to the developments within Bangladesh cricket.
Bulbul Removed Amid Controversy
According to sources, Bulbul's removal is linked to the fallout from the recent T20 World Cup controversy, where political interference disrupted Bangladesh's participation plans.
During the episode, former interim government advisor Asif Nazrul reportedly
opposed the team's travel to India and pushed for shifting matches away from venues like Kolkata and Mumbai. Bulbul's inability to effectively handle the situation is believed to have led to growing dissatisfaction within the board.
The unrest culminated in the resignation of six BCB directors in recent days, further weakening Bulbul's position.
Tamim Iqbal to Lead Transition
In a swift move, the NSC dissolved the existing board and constituted an 11-member ad-hoc committee to manage the board's affairs. Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the head of the committee, marking his return to a leadership role in the country's cricketing ecosystem.
The committee also includes prominent names such as Athar Ali Khan and Minhazul Abedin Nannu, among others, and has been tasked with conducting fresh elections within the next 90 days.
ICC Informed, No Immediate Threat
The NSC has already informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the developments. While ICC regulations typically prohibit government interference in cricket board matters, a suspension appears unlikely at this stage.
With a clear timeline for elections in place, the global governing body is expected to monitor the situation rather than take immediate punitive action.
A Crucial Phase for Bangladesh Cricket
The transition comes at a sensitive time for Bangladesh cricket, both administratively and diplomatically.
With talks underway to revive bilateral series with India and the need to stabilise internal governance, the newly formed committee faces the dual challenge of restoring credibility and ensuring smooth cricketing operations.
