Shai Hope's commanding performances against India have drawn comparisons with former Australia opener Matthew Hayden, with JioStar expert Abhishek Nayar highlighting the West Indies captain's ability to dominate Indian bowling across conditions and formats. The assessment comes after West Indies levelled the five-match T20I series at 2-2 with a 24-run victory in Hyderabad, setting up a series decider in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Hope has been central to West Indies' campaign, combining controlled strokeplay with the ability to accelerate against both pace and spin. Speaking on JioStar's *Haier Cricket Live*, Nayar said the right-hander's performances recalled the impact Hayden made during Australia's tours of India in the 2000s.
"The last time I
can think of someone dominating India in India was when the Australian team came in the 2000s, Matthew Hayden used to take our bowlers to the cleaners, and Shai Hope is doing something very similar," Nayar said.
Abhishek Nayar Praises Shai Hope's All-Round Batting Ability
Nayar pointed to Hope's balance between timing and power as a defining feature of his batting. Rather than relying exclusively on aggressive hitting or touch, the West Indies captain has demonstrated the ability to adapt his approach to different bowling styles.
"You can't call him a power player or a touch player. He has found the perfect balance, where he can use the pace, but when required, he can generate force and hit those big sixes," Nayar said.
Hope has also handled challenges against India's pace and spin options, according to Nayar. The expert highlighted his ability to counter Mayank Yadav's pace while playing the variations of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel effectively.
"He has basically taken the Indian bowling to the cleaners in every format on this tour of India," Nayar added.
The former India assistant coach also praised Hope's ability to shoulder multiple responsibilities as captain and wicketkeeper while continuing to deliver with the bat.
"To get a century at a strike rate of 200 tells you what Shai Hope can do, keeping wickets, captaining the side, and still coming out again and again to win games for his team, that is very rare to see," he said.
Cheteshwar Pujara Highlights Hope's Control Against India
JioStar expert Cheteshwar Pujara also praised Hope's approach, emphasising that his success has come through disciplined shot selection rather than indiscriminate hitting.
"Shai Hope has been a problem for India in this white-ball series against the West Indies and what stands out is that he does not rely on blind slogging. He backs his natural game and picks his gaps," Pujara said.
The former India batter noted that Hope's timing, understanding of his scoring areas and control against spin had made it difficult for India to build pressure.
"Once he's set, he's a hard player to stop. And if you look at his strike rate, it has been phenomenal throughout the series," Pujara added.
Pujara also pointed to Hope's record of four centuries on the tour of India, describing him as the standout performer in the T20I series.
Keemo Paul Turns the Fourth T20I in West Indies' Favour
While Hope's batting helped West Indies challenge India, Keemo Paul's bowling proved decisive in Hyderabad.
Pujara credited the fast bowler with changing the momentum immediately by dismissing Sanju Samson with his first delivery. Paul then removed Ishan Kishan in the same over before returning in the 19th over to take three wickets in a decisive spell.
"This win was all about Keemo Paul," Pujara said, praising West Indies for responding under pressure after the first three matches.
The victory brought the series level at 2-2 and ensured that neither side could claim the trophy before the final match.
Sunil Gavaskar Identifies India's Batting Concerns
JioStar expert Sunil Gavaskar said India's batting approach in the fourth T20I needed scrutiny, particularly given the conditions and the team's expectations as back-to-back T20 World Cup winners.
"The first thing this Indian side needs to improve is how they chase. On a pitch like this, with the dew coming in, you have to show the kind of dominance with the bat that a back-to-back T20 World Cup winning team should, but that was missing completely in this game," Gavaskar said.
He acknowledged Samson's contribution at the start of the innings but criticised the rest of the batting unit for failing to build on it. Gavaskar also pointed to Abhishek Sharma's dismissal, Kishan's failure to counter Paul's plan and Shreyas Iyer's recent struggles after scoring a century.
The former India captain argued that the batters needed to take greater responsibility, while also noting that India's relatively inexperienced bowlers required opportunities to learn at international level.
Gavaskar suggested that India should bat first in Bengaluru, aim for a total of 240-250 and then restrict West Indies. He warned that the team's chances would depend on its batters responding with greater responsibility.
India and West Indies Set for T20I Series Decider
India will face West Indies in the fifth T20I on Saturday, October 17, with the series tied at 2-2. The match in Bengaluru will determine the winner after West Indies recovered to win the fourth contest by 24 runs.
India's bowling lengths and variations, along with the batting unit's response under pressure, will be important areas to watch. West Indies, meanwhile, will look to carry forward the momentum generated by Hope's performances and Paul's match-winning spell.
The fifth T20I begins at 7 PM IST and will be broadcast live on JioHotstar and the Star Sports Network.
