India suffered a setback ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand as all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remainder of the three-match series following a side strain sustained in the opening
game in Vadodara.
The 26-year-old felt discomfort midway through his spell at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi and left the field after delivering just five overs, conceding 27 runs. He did not return for the rest of the New Zealand innings, raising immediate concerns within the Indian camp and as per a report by Sports Tak, he is ruled out and the official announcement will be made soon.
Despite the injury, Sundar showed great grit by coming out to bat at No. 8 during India's chase. His composed presence in the lower order played a crucial part in India securing a four-wicket victory in the series opener. However, with medical assessment pointing towards a side strain, the team management has opted against taking any risks. The BCCI is expected to make an official announcement soon, but internal assessments confirm he will play no further part in the series.
Side and back-related injuries are known to require cautious management, especially with India's packed schedule leading into the T20 World Cup 2026, which begins on February 7. Sundar is considered an important squad member for the global event, particularly for conditions in the subcontinent where his off-spin and batting depth provide balance to the side, even if he isn't always part of the first-choice XI.
Sundar's exit adds to India's growing injury list. Earlier, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the series after being struck in the right lateral abdominal region during a practice session. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel has been drafted into the squad and is expected to feature in the upcoming games.
India captain Shubman Gill also confirmed Sundar's side strain injury after the match. The team now faces the challenge of reshuffling their combination ahead of the second ODI in Rajkot on January 14, followed by the final fixture in Indore on January 18.
With two key players unavailable, India's bench strength will once again be tested as they look to wrap up the series.
