Chennai Super Kings have begun their IPL 2026 campaign on a disappointing note, losing their opening two matches. The first defeat came against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30, where CSK were bundled out for 127 and lost by eight wickets.
The second, and more galling, was a five-wicket home loss to Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 3. Batting first after losing the toss, CSK posted a competitive 209, powered by Ayush Mhatre's 73 and Shivam Dube's 45. However, PBKS chased the target with clinical ease in just 18.4 overs. Priyansh Arya's explosive 39 and Shreyas Iyer's steady 50 set up the chase, while Marcus Stoinis sealed it with a flourish.
The bowling attack, led by Anshul Kamboj's two wickets, couldn't stem the
flow as PBKS cruised home with eight balls to spare. CSK now sit at the bottom of the points table with two losses and a net run rate of -2.562.
Yet, history and logic both suggest panic is premature. IPL leagues are marathons, not sprints. Each team plays 14 matches, and only the top four advance to the playoffs.
CSK still very much in Playoff Race
With 12 games still remaining, including a string of home fixtures at Chepauk, where CSK's spin-heavy attack and passionate crowd have historically turned matches, there is ample time for recovery. Although CSK have lost six in a row at their den, a revival is still on the cards.
No team has ever been eliminated after two losses this early, and several franchises have bounced back from worse starts. In 2024, for instance, CSK themselves recovered from a slow beginning to reach the final.
The current squad retains its core strengths. Ruturaj Gaikwad remains a reliable leader and opener, now partnering with the newly acquired Sanju Samson, whose experience adds firepower at the top. The middle order features proven performers like Dube, while the bowling unit, despite the PBKS chase, boasts variety.
MS Dhoni Return will Boost CSK
As MS Dhoni's absence on the field is palpable, his return to the field from the calf strain will significantly boost CSK and their hopes. The morale, which is down right now, can get an uplift with 'Thala' on the pitch. Similarly, Dewald Brevis, a key performer from last season, is also struggling with an injury, and his return would bring similar vibes.
Crucially, CSK's next fixtures offer breathing room. An away game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 5 is followed by home matches against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. A couple of wins here could quickly lift the team off the bottom and boost confidence. Net run rate damage from the heavy RR defeat can be repaired with disciplined performances in the coming weeks.
IPL has repeatedly shown that momentum shifts fast; teams that stay calm, tweak combinations, and capitalise on home advantage often surge into the top four.
For a five-time champion like CSK, two early losses are not a crisis but a wake-up call. The squad's experience, home-ground advantage, and depth mean qualification remains well within reach. The Yellow Army faithful know their team thrives under pressure. As the season unfolds, expect the familiar CSK resilience to surface. Playoffs are still very much on the cards.
