Sano is a 25-year-old defensive midfielder who plays club football for Mainz 05 in Germany.
Known more for ball-winning and midfield control than scoring, he entered the Brazil match with limited attacking numbers at both club and international level. His goal, therefore, came as a surprise, especially given the stage and the opponent.
During the 2025-26 season with Mainz, Sano scored once and provided two assists. He had already contributed for Japan earlier in the tournament, registering an assist during the Samurai Blue's 4-0 win over Tunisia in the group stage.
