Bayer Leverkusen missed a significant chance in the Bundesliga top-four race after a 1-1 draw at Borussia Monchengladbach. The result prevented Kasper Hjulmand's side from closing to within one point of fourth-place Stuttgart, despite playing with a game in hand and stretching a long unbeaten run against Gladbach.
Stuttgart had earlier lost to St Pauli, opening a door for Leverkusen, who now sit three points behind with that extra match still to play. Die Werkself are unbeaten in 13 league meetings with Monchengladbach, yet a sequence of six successive away victories came to an end at BORUSSIA-PARK.
The match opened with drama in the 10th minute, when Monchengladbach punished a loose pass by Janis Blaswich towards Aleix Garcia. The hosts seized
possession quickly, Haris Tabakovic's strike was saved, and Yannik Engelhardt, celebrating a 25th birthday, reacted first to guide the rebound into the net for the early lead.
Leverkusen responded just before the interval through a long-range strike from Garcia. The midfielder's effort appeared manageable for goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas, but took a heavy deflection off defender Philipp Sander, wrong-footing Nicolas and bringing the score level as Sander was credited with an own goal.
The visitors almost completed a full turnaround three minutes into the second half. Patrik Schick cut inside and curled a left-footed attempt that brushed the outside of the post. Later, Jens Castrop saw an effort from a narrow angle kept out, while Exequiel Palacios shot straight at Nicolas, as both teams failed to create a decisive moment.
Neither side did enough to dominate the attacking numbers. Leverkusen recorded 10 shots to Gladbach's nine, but both struggled for clear chances. The expected goals data underlined that lack of cutting edge, with a combined xG total that stayed below 1.5 across the 90 minutes.
Leverkusen's current away sequence highlights both resilience and vulnerability. Die Werkself are without a clean sheet in 13 consecutive Bundesliga away fixtures, their longest such run since a 17-match streak in the 2005-06 season. Yet the team continue to collect points, including this draw that nudged them a little closer to Stuttgart despite the frustration.

The draw leaves Leverkusen with mixed feelings: a long unbeaten spell against Monchengladbach stays intact, but a valuable away winning streak is gone and defensive issues on the road continue. With a game in hand and three points to make up on Stuttgart, every remaining fixture now carries extra weight.
