Vaibhav Suryavanshi may already be one of the most explosive young batters Indian cricket has seen in years, but former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes there is still one major area the teenager must improve before making the jump to international cricket - fielding.
The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals prodigy has taken IPL 2026 by storm with his fearless six-hitting and attacking intent, drawing comparisons with some of the game's most destructive T20 batters. However, Kaif believes Suryavanshi's fielding standards are still below the level expected in modern international cricket.
Speaking on JioHotstar's Champions Waali Commentary, Kaif delivered a detailed assessment of the youngster's missed catching effort and explained why fielding
could become a decisive factor in his India prospects.
"I have not seen Vaibhav Sooryavanshi take a single catch yet"
Kaif stressed that talent with the bat alone is no longer enough to guarantee success at the highest level.
"I believe scouts should also take a fielding test while scouting players," Kaif said.
"The scouts are bringing the right players; they are doing a great job, but I have not seen Vaibhav Sooryavanshi take a single catch yet. "
The former Indian fielder, widely regarded as one of the best fielders India has produced, suggested that modern cricket demands complete athleticism rather than just batting ability.
Why Kaif criticised Sooryavanshi dropped catch
Kaif specifically referred to a missed chance against Delhi Capitals batter Sahil Parakh, where Sooryavanshi got into position but failed to complete the catch.
"If he wants to play for India, he needs to improve his fielding ability. He needs to pass that fielding test first," Kaif explained.
"The ball that came towards him was at a good height. I understand that when a batter plays a flick shot, taking a catch can sometimes become difficult for a fielder as it becomes a blind spot. "
"But there, the shot that Sahil Parakh played, the ball came to Sooryavanshi at a good height. "
According to Kaif, the youngster actually did the difficult part correctly - reaching the right position - but overcomplicated the final execution.
"Sooryavanshi did a great job by getting into the right position to take that catch, but he missed the opportunity to execute it. "
"There was no need for Sooryavanshi to jump to take that catch. All he needed to do was take it near his waist, but he missed it. "
Kaif is still impressed with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Despite the criticism, Kaif made it clear that he remains hugely impressed by Sooryavanshi's batting ability and natural talent.
"Vaibhav is really talented with the bat, no doubt about that, but when it comes to fielding, he is still not ready," he said.
The teenager has become one of the breakout stars of IPL 2026, regularly taking apart experienced bowlers with remarkable confidence and bat speed.
Harbhajan Singh backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
While Kaif highlighted Sooryavanshi's weaknesses in the field, Harbhajan Singh focused on just how difficult the youngster has become to bowl to.
Speaking on the same show, Harbhajan admitted the Rajasthan Royals batter has surprised even former international players with the range and freedom of his strokeplay.
"Against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, my plan would be to get his wicket anyhow," Harbhajan said.
"But what kind of form he is in matters a lot. My plan would be to spin the ball and keep it away from his hitting arc. "
The former India spinner explained that allowing Sooryavanshi room inside his natural scoring areas could quickly become dangerous.
"If he steps out of the crease and tries to hit me, that's okay. But I don't want him to play his shots while standing in the crease. "
Harbhajan Singh makes big Sooryavanshi claim
Harbhajan then made perhaps the biggest statement yet about the teenager's batting potential.
"But the kind of batter he is, at the age of 15, he is hitting every bowler for a six. "
"I have played with many players, but I have never seen a batter like Sooryavanshi who dominates every bowler from ball one. "
"I have dismissed Chris Gayle many times, but Sooryavanshi is at a different level altogether. His bat flow is something I have never seen. "
Why fielding could decide Sooryavanshi's India timeline
In modern Indian cricket, fielding standards have become almost non-negotiable, especially in white-ball formats.
India's current setup places massive emphasis on:
- athleticism
- catching consistency
- boundary fielding
- reaction speed
That is why Kaif's comments may carry serious significance despite Sooryavanshi's batting brilliance.
The teenager's talent is already unquestioned.
But if he wants to transition from IPL sensation to India regular, improving his fielding could become the final piece needed to complete the package.
